action
The German tourist Kiki and the Swiss tour guide Marlies are kidnapped by Contra rebels from Nicaragua while on vacation in Costa Rica . When the two women were released after 72 days against payment of a ransom, the police suspected they had made common cause with the kidnappers.
background
The film was inspired by the actual experiences of the Germans Nicola Fleuchaus and the Swiss Susanne Siegfried in 1996. Their kidnapping made headlines around the world.
The film achieved the highest audience rating of all television films made by the station in 2000 and was nominated for the European television award.
Reviews
While the evening newspaper describes the film as lengthy and drawn out, Prisma magazine praises the breathtaking images and the excellent leading actresses. The lexicon of international film expresses itself similarly . There it is said that Die Geiseln von Costa Rica is a "routinely staged (television) thriller intensely performed by two outstanding actresses".
