Georg Steins

Georg Steins (born February 16, 1959 in Paderborn ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian . He is a representative of canonical - intertextual exegesis .

biography

Steins studied theology and philosophy at the universities of Münster (Westphalia) , Tübingen and Innsbruck (Austria), he obtained his diploma in Catholic theology in 1985. From 1987 to 1990 he worked as a research assistant in Münster, from 1990 to 1993 at the university Osnabrück.

In 1993 he received his doctorate in theology in Münster and was then (until 2002) lecturer in biblical theology at the Hildesheim seminary . In 1998 he obtained the Venia Legendi for Exegesis of the Old Testament at the University of Münster , where he was a private lecturer in the Old Testament.

Since 2002 he has been Professor of Biblical Theology / Exegesis of the Old Testament at the Institute for Catholic Theology at the University of Osnabrück and a member of the Research Center for Christian-Jewish Studies. He was / is also active as a lecturer or visiting professor at other universities in Germany and abroad. His areas of work include: methodology and methodology of biblical exegesis (especially the canon problem); central topics of biblical theology (e.g. creation, miracles); the interpretation of the books of Genesis, Exodus, Chronicle, Esra / Nehemia, Amos, Daniel; Questions of Bible pastoral care. The concept of “canonical-intertextual reading” that he coined is attracting international attention.

Steins is a collaborator on the translation project " Septuaginta German", as well as on the commentary series "New Stuttgart Commentary / Old Testament" and "Herder's Theological Commentary on the Old Testament". He was a member of the editorial staff of “Bible and Liturgy” from 1995 until the magazine was discontinued in 2017. He belongs to the inter-university “Project Group Location Determination. Theology and Cultural Studies ”and the working group“ Bible and Social Ethics ”. He co-founded the EABS research group “Canonical Approaches to the Bible”.

Steins has been married to Marianne Heimbach since 1989 , who is also a professor of Catholic theology. Steins is one of the initiators of the memorandum Church 2011: A necessary departure . In the summer semester of 2014 he was a fellow at the Theological Research College of the University of Erfurt.

Steins coordinates the master’s course in theology and culture at the University of Osnabrück.

He is part of the team of lecturers at the Graduate School "Shaping Religious Differences. The Formation of Pluralism in Christianity and Islam" (2018–2021) at the University of Osnabrück.
