The city of Kosai was founded on January 1st, 1972 .

The main station in Kosai is Shinjohara station on the Tōkaidō main line . From this the Tenryū-Hamanako line branches off to Kakegawa . The city is also accessed through National Road 1 between Tokyo and Kyoto .
