Nishio toshizo ( Japanese : 西尾寿造 * 3. October 1881 in Tottori , Tottori Prefecture ; † 26. October 1960 ) was a general of the Imperial Japanese Army , among others, from 1934 to 1936 Chief of Staff of the Kwantung Army , of 1936 to 1937 Vice-Chief of the General Staff of the Imperial Japanese Army , between 1937 and 1938 Commander-in-Chief of the re-mobilized 2nd Army , from 1939 to 1941 Commander-in-Chief of the new China Expeditionary Army and between 1944 and 1945 Governor of the Tokyo Prefecture .

Life

Nishio Toshizō began officer training in 1900 at the Army Officer School , which he completed in 1902. As a lieutenant he took part in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 and fought, among other things, in October 1904 in the Battle of the Shaho . In 1907 he graduated from the Army University and was promoted to captain after graduating in 1909 . After the First World War , he was adjutant in the Army Ministry between August 15, 1919 and April 1, 1921 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on August 10, 1920 during this assignment . Subsequently, he was seconded from April 1, 1921 to April 1, 1923 to the 10th Infantry Regiment and then taught between April 1, 1923 and March 18, 1925 as an instructor at the Army University, where he also worked on August 6, 1923 for Colonel was promoted. After his promotion to major general on August 1, 1929, Nishio Toshizō was commander of the 39th Infantry Brigade until August 1, 1930 and then between August 1, 1930 and April 11, 1932 Chairman of the Military Research Committee of the Army Ministry. He then acted from April 11, 1932 to March 5, 1934 as chief of the 4th Section of the General Staff of the Imperial Japanese Army and was promoted as such on August 1, 1933 to Lieutenant General. As the successor to Lieutenant General Koiso Kuniaki , he took over the post of Chief of Staff of the Kwantung Army on March 5, 1934 and remained in this position until March 23, 1936, whereupon Lieutenant General Itagaki Seishirō became his successor. Thereupon he was from March 23, 1936 to March 1, 1937 Vice-Chief of the General Staff of the Imperial Japanese Army and at the same time acting Chief of the General Affairs Section of the General Staff. After he was briefly commander of the Imperial Guard between March 1 and August 26, 1937 , he held the post after the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War from August 26, 1937 until his replacement by General Higashikuni Naruhiko on August 30, 1938 as commander in chief of the re-mobilized 2nd Army .

After his return, Nishio Toshizō was from August 30, 1938 to September 12, 1939 Inspector General for Military Training and was promoted to general in this role on August 1, 139 . At the beginning of the Second World War he became Commander-in-Chief of the newly established 13th Army on September 12, 1939 , but was replaced by Lieutenant General Fujita Susumu on October 26, 1939 . At the same time he became commander-in-chief of the new China expeditionary army on September 22, 1939 and held this position until he was replaced by General Field Marshal ( Gensui ) Hata Shunroku on March 1, 1941. Most recently he replaced Ōdachi Shigeo as governor of Tokyo Prefecture on July 25, 1944 and held this office until August 31, 1945, whereupon Hirose Hisatada succeeded him.
