The Army College ( Japanese 陸軍 大 学校 , Rikugun Daigakkō ) was founded in 1882 as part of the building of a modern army in the Japanese Empire , in Tokyo 's Aoyama district in today's Minato district . Graduates of the Army Officer School , founded in 1874 , who were at least 30 years old and had completed two years of military service were accepted.

After the samurai lost their warrior caste status, the country needed a new army . For this purpose, conscription was introduced and French military advisors were brought into the country (see o-yatoi gaikokujin ). After Prussia's victory in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, however, France lost its reputation in Japan as the predominant army power, and the French officers were gradually replaced by Germans . Major Klemens Wilhelm Jacob Meckel did a particularly successful job .

The Prime Minister Tanaka Giichi , Hayashi Senjūrō , Nobuyuki Abe , Kuniaki Koiso and prince naruhiko higashikuni were graduates of the academy, as well Pujie , by the Japanese designated heir of the Manchu throne and brother of Puyi .

The army college was dissolved after the surrender of Japan .
