Hayashi Senjūrō ( Japanese 林 銑 十郎 ; born February 23, 1876 in Kanazawa , Japan , † February 4, 1943 in Tokyo ) was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army , politician and the 33rd Prime Minister of Japan .

Life

Born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1876 , Hayashi received his first major command when he was commanding officer of the 57th Regiment from 1918 to 1920, followed by a post at the headquarters of the military's technical research department in 1921. From 1921 to 1923 he was director of the Preparatory course at the Imperial Japanese Army Academy before briefly taking over the post of General Inspector of Military Training, who supervised the basic flight training of the Japanese Army Air Force . Before he held this post again between 1924 and 1925, he briefly represented the Japanese army in the League of Nations .

In 1925, Hayashi was appointed the commanding officer of the 2nd Brigade. A year later, in 1926, he became the commander of the fortress in Tokyo Bay. Another year later he took over the post of director of the Imperial Japanese Army University . In 1928 he became Deputy Inspector General of Military Training and in 1929 he moved to Commander of the Imperial Japanese Guard .

Hayashi was on 22 November 1930, Commander- in Chosen stationed Chosen Army . One day after the Mukden incident on September 18, 1931, he detached parts of the 20th Division under his command and formed the 39th Mixed Brigade from them. In contrast to the army, the Japanese cabinet was not of the opinion that the Mukden incident was an enemy attack on the Japanese, but instead suspected a conspiracy by officers of the Kwantung Army behind the incident and therefore did not order any troops to be transferred to Manchuria for the time being on. However, Hayashi did not wait for an official order and set the 39th Mixed Brigade on the day of its formation, September 19, towards Manchuria. After the cabinet ceded control of the growing conflict to the military, it legalized Hayashi's order retrospectively on September 22nd.

After being recalled from Chosen on May 26, 1932, Hayashi was again appointed Inspector General of Military Training and was simultaneously a member of the Supreme War Council . On June 14, 1932, he received the Order of the Holy Treasure , 1st class. From January 23, 1934 to September 5, 1935 he was also Minister of the Army . He was regarded as a supporter of tōseiha why this group is regarded as a victory, he whom the Imperial Way Faction belonging Sadao Araki replaced in January 1934 as Defense Minister. The dispute between the Tōseiha and Kōdōha, however, continued, more or less hidden within the government. On April 29, 1934 he received the Order of the Rising Sun , 1st class.

Hayashi also supported Konoe Fumimaro's ideas that only the right -wing militarists among the new militarists could clear up the misdirected "invention" called democracy and form a suitable advisory group for the Tennō to prevent the left-wing militarists from taking power. The latter was accused of wanting to create a statistic state.

From February 2 to June 4, 1937, he served as prime minister , as well as education minister and foreign minister until March 3 .

He died in Tokyo on February 4, 1943 and on that day received the Order of the Rising Sun, 1st class with paulownia flower.
