Kanaya Hanzo
Kanaya Hanzō ( Japanese 金谷 範 三 ; born April 24, 1873 in Takada , Kunisaki County (today: Bungo-Takada ), Ōita Prefecture ; † June 6, 1933 ) was a Japanese general in the Imperial Japanese Army who served between 1930 and 1931 Chief of the General Staff of the Imperial Japanese Army (Sanbō Honbu) was.
Life
Kanaya Hanzō, son of a doctor, attended the private Seijō school in Shinjuku and completed an officer training at the Army Officer School (Rikugun Shikan Gakkō) , which he graduated in July 1894. He then became a lieutenant in the 3rd Infantry Regiment in September 1894 and took part in the First Sino-Japanese War. He finished his training as a staff officer at the Army University (Rikugun Daigakkō) in November 1901 with distinction. Afterwards he was company commander , officer in the general staff and between 1904 and 1905 took part in the Russo-Japanese War as an officer in the staff department of the 2nd Army . After serving as an adjutant to the military attaché at the embassy in the German Empire , he was an instructor at the army university between December 2, 1909 and November 11, 1912.
Subsequently, Kanaya Hanzo acted from November 11, 1911 and July 28, 1914 as a military attaché at the embassy in Austria-Hungary and was promoted to colonel on August 22, 1913 during this time . After his return he acted between August 10, 1914 and May 2, 1916 as commander of the 57th Infantry Regiment and from May 2, 1916 to July 16, 1918 as head of Section 2 of Department 1 of the General Staff, which was responsible for military maneuvers . After his promotion to major general on June 10, 1918, he took over from Lieutenant General Ishimitsu Maomi the post of Commander in Chief of the Garrison Army China (Shina Chūtongun) , which he held until his replacement by Major General Minami Jirō on July 25, 1919. Thereupon he was from July 25, 1919 to February 8, 1923 Head of Department 1 of the General Staff and between February 8, 1923 and August 15, 1923 Secretary of the Supreme War Council (Gunji Sangiin) .
After his promotion to Lieutenant General Kanaya Hanzo succeeded Lieutenant General Kozan Kimimichi as commander of the 18th Division (Dai-jūhachi Shidan) on August 15, 1923 and held this position until May 1, 1925. He then succeeded Lieutenant General Mutō Nobuyoshi as Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Imperial Japanese Army and held this post until March 5, 1927, whereupon Lieutenant General Minami Jirō replaced. On March 2, 1926, he again succeeded Lieutenant General Watanabe Jōtarō as commander of the Army University and remained in this position until his replacement by Lieutenant General Hayashi Senjūrō on March 5, 1927. He then acted as the successor to Lieutenant General Morioka Omori from March 5, 1927 to to his replacement by Lieutenant General Minami Jirō on August 1, 1929 as commander in chief of the Chōsen Army (Chōsen-gun) stationed in Korea and was promoted to general on August 10, 1928 during this time .
After he was a member of the Supreme War Council between August 1, 1929 and February 19, 1930, General Kanaya Hanzo took over from General Suzuki Soroku on February 19, 1930 the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Imperial Japanese Army (Sanbō Honbu) , which he held until his replacement by Field Marshal Kan'in Kotohito on December 23, 1931. Most recently he was a member of the Supreme War Council from December 23, 1931 until his death on June 6, 1933.
