Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries ( 農林水産省, Nōrin-suisan-shō , English Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries , short: MAFF ) is a ministry with cabinet rank . The area of responsibility is agriculture and forestry, animal husbandry and fishing as well as food safety and consumer protection as well as land reclamation projects.
It is divided into the minister's secretariat and five departments. In addition, the forest authority ( 林野 庁, Rin'ya-chō ) and the fisheries authority ( 水産 庁, Suisan-chō ) are assigned to him. In the 2006 fiscal year, the MAFF with its regional offices and associated authorities had a total regular budget of 2.8 trillion yen (around 16.8 billion euros, as of 2006).
In 1881 the Ministry of Agriculture and Trade ( 農 商務 省, Nōshōmu-shō ) was founded. In 1925 it was renamed the 'Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry' ( 農林 省, Nōrin-shō ) and responsibility for trade was outsourced to a separate ministry. In 1978 it finally got its current name.
