The third cabinet, Nakasone, ruled Japan under the leadership of Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro from July 22, 1986 to November 6, 1987. From the election to the Shūgiin, the lower house, on July 6, 1986 and the simultaneous election to the Sangiin, the upper house , was Nakasone's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) emerged with an absolute majority of the seats and was no longer dependent on the ruling coalition with the New Liberal Club. On July 22, Nakasone was confirmed as prime minister in the Shūgiin with 304 votes and presented his cabinet on the same day.

Of the ministers of state, including the prime minister, were 18 deputies from the Shūgiin and three from the Sangiin. A minister from the previous cabinet, Chief Cabinet Secretary Gotōda , was taken over. Simultaneously with the beginning of the term of office of the ministers of state, the deputy cabinet secretaries ( Watanabe Hideo , Fujimori Shōichi ) and the head of the legislative office of the cabinet ( Mimura Osamu ) took up their offices.

In September 1986 Nakasone's term of office as chairman of the LDP was extended by one year by the LDP MPs from both chambers. On October 31, 1987, Takeshita Noboru was nominated by Nakasone to succeed him as party chairman, and the Nakasone cabinet resigned on November 6, 1987.
