The Katayama ( Japanese 片 山 内閣 , Katayama naikaku ) cabinet ruled Japan from May 24, 1947 to March 10, 1948.
The Socialist Party of Japan (SPJ) emerged from the Sangiin election in 1947 on April 20 and the Shūgiin election in 1947 on April 25 as the strongest party. Cabinet and prime minister , which were not explicitly mentioned in the imperial constitution , became the subject of the new constitution that came into force on May 3rd , after which the cabinet must resign after a general Shūgiin election (Article 70) and the prime minister becomes his own parliament Ranks elected (Art. 67): On May 23, SPJ chairman Katayama Tetsu was elected Prime Minister. Because the coalition and the personal details had not yet been finally negotiated when Katayama's appointment was made, Prime Minister Katayama was provisionally also foreign, domestic, financial, judicial, educational, health and social, agricultural, Trade and Industry, Transport, Communication Minister and Head of the Price Authority - a so-called “one-person cabinet” ( 一 人 内閣 hitori naikaku ). Thereafter, the cabinet initially included seven ministers from the SPJ, eight ministers from the Democratic Party , two ministers from the Kokumin Kyōdōtō ("Cooperativist People's Party") and one member of the Ryokufūkai faction .
After conflicts with the party left, Katayama resigned in February 1948. His deputy Ashida Hitoshi was elected Prime Minister on February 21, 1948 against the vote of Sangiin. The cabinet remained in office until March 10th.
