Masatoshi Wakabayashi ( Japanese 若 林 正 俊 , Wakabayashi Masatoshi ; born July 4, 1934 in Shinonoi (now: Nagano ), Nagano Prefecture ) is a former Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and minister. He was most recently a member of the Sangiin , the Japanese upper house, for the constituency of Nagano and belonged to the Machimura faction within the LDP .

Wakabayashi is a graduate of the University of Tokyo and after completing his studies in 1957 became a civil servant in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries . In 1983 he left the ministry and was elected to the Shūgiin , the lower house, for the first time . From 1989 to 1990 Wakabayashi was Parliamentary State Secretary in the Department of Management and Coordination . After losing his seat in 1990, he was re -elected in the 1993 Shūgiin election . In 1996 he was voted out again under the new right to vote. In 1998 Wakabayashi was finally elected to the Sangiin and joined the Machimura faction.

In the cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzō Abe Wakabayashi was appointed Minister of the Environment in 2006 , where he took over the Ministry of Agriculture after the suicide of Toshikatsu Matsuoka and the resignation of Norihiko Akagi . After the cabinet reshuffle in August 2006, he was initially no longer a member of the cabinet, but after Takehiko Endō's resignation, he was succeeded as Minister of Agriculture. Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda left him in office when he took office, but replaced him with Seiichi Ōta in August 2008 .

In April 2010, he submitted his resignation as a Member of Parliament after it became known that he had voted in (electronic) votes for the absent parliamentary group colleague Mikio Aoki without his consent. His eldest son Kenta won his seat in the regular election in July 2010 .
