The Charleston Express class is one of five container ships existing class of the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd .

history

The ships used by Hapag-Lloyd today were originally ordered by the Canadian shipping company CP Ships for its two subsidiaries Transportacion Maritima Mexicana (TMM) and Lykes Lines . The quintet was built and delivered between 2001 and 2003 by the Taiwanese shipyard China Shipbuilding Corporation in Kaohsiung. In 2005, CP Ships signed a contract with the US government, brought the five ships under the US flag as part of the Maritime Security Program and named them after American national parks. After the takeover of CP Ships by Hapag-Lloyd in 2005, the ships were given names typical of Hapag-Lloyd in the course of the subsequent integration of the services of both liner shipping companies.

technology

The ships have superstructures about four fifths aft above the propulsion system. One hold is behind the deckhouse, the rest in front. The holds are provided with cell guides and are closed by pontoon hatch covers. The container capacity is 3237 TEU and 400 reefer container connections are available. The loading gear consists of four centrally arranged 40-tonne ship cranes, three of which are arranged in front of the deckhouse and one serves the rear cargo space.

The main drive consists of a HSD B&W eight-cylinder marine diesel engine of the type 8K80MC-C with an output of 29,243  kW , which acts directly on a fixed propeller. The ships can thus reach a speed of around 22.5  knots . The energy supply is ensured by three auxiliary diesels and one emergency diesel. A bow thruster is available to support the docking and casting off maneuvers .
