Norasia Samantha

The series of extremely unconventional container ships of the type NG254 FFB (Fast Feeder Containership) have also become known as container frigates .

history

The concept of the British ship construction firm Nigel Gee & Associates, known above all for its designs of fast yachts, provided the basis for the ship type without hatch, which was exceptionally fast in its construction . The design of either a particularly fast feeder ship or a small liner container ship was developed in collaboration between the Swiss shipping company Norasia Lines and the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel .

Superstructures of the ship

As the first ship of the series, Howaldtswerke built the Norasia Samantha in 1998 for the owner company Samantha Shipping . It was completed in June 1998 and taken over by Norasia Lines. Then the strikingly designed ship with its streamlined structure began its maiden voyage on the Canada Express Service from Zeebrugge to Montreal, on which it set a speed record for cargo ships with a speed of 26.15 knots. This type ship was followed by four of the same type of sister ships on the HDW : Norasia Savannah , Norasia Salomb , Norasia Sheeba and Norasia Scarlet . Another five sister ships built from 1999 to late 2000, the Chinese shipyard Jiangnan Shipyard in Zhangjiagang . They were the Norasia Sultana , Norasia Selina , Norasia Shereen , Norasia Salwa , and Norasia Sabrina . The units built in China differ in a few points from the HDW buildings. The German buildings received two MAN SE 9L 58/64 diesel engines as the main engines, while the Chinese units received two Sulzer 16VZAV40S each instead. There are also externally differences - for example, the Jiangnan units have a triangular recess in the outer skin in the foredeck area , which was consistently straight and closed on the ships built in Kiel. In addition, the free-fall lifeboat in the HDW structures is fitted into the aft Cellguides structure; in the Chinese ships, there is a platform in the upper area of the transom in the entire width of the deck on which the lifeboat frame is built.

Technical problems of the whole series, especially with the gearboxes supplied by Schelde-Naval, led to downtimes and financial losses, whereupon the whole shipping company Norasia got into trouble. The Norasia Samantha and the other ships of the series were sold to Abu Dhabi Container in 2000 and then mostly passed through several hands. All remaining units in the series are now owned by the Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

In 2012 the ships built in 1999 and 2000 as Norasia Sultana and Norasia Shereen near Jiangnan were scrapped as the first units of the series. In 2013 the Norasia Selina , built in 1999, followed , so that as of 2013 seven ships were still in service.
