The ships of the Hyundai 2800 series were built between 1995 and 1997 in Ulsan by Hyundai Heavy Industries and delivered to various German shipping companies. Six of the ships went to the Hansa Mare Reederei in Bremen, five to the Karl Schlüter shipping company in Rendsburg and two to Islamar Shipmanagement in Cyprus, which belongs to the H. Janssen shipping company in Bad Zwischenahn.
The ships are set up for the transport of dangerous cargo and have a container space capacity of between 2808 and 2959 TEU, depending on the construction. With a homogeneous loading of 14 ton containers, the capacity is 2110 TEU. Depending on the construction, 200 to 400 connections for refrigerated containers are available. The ships built for the Bremen-based Hansa Mare Reederei have a higher container space capacity and differ externally in the cell guides on the aft deck area. All ships have superstructures three-quarters aft and have five holds equipped with cell guides , the nine hatches of which are closed with pontoon hatch covers. Four of the holds are in front of the deckhouse, one behind. The ship's propulsion system consists of a two-stroke diesel engine that acts directly on the fixed propeller. The main engine models used are the HHI-MAN-B & W 8S70 MC with 22,470 kW (Hansa Mare) and the HHI-Sulzer 8RTA 72U with 23,920 kW (Schlüter and Janssen). The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .
Trivia
A ship of this type, the Northern Vitality , initially carried out test handling work in the deep-water port JadeWeserPort in 2012 and was then to be scrapped in India. The ship was detained by the German authorities until October 11, 2012 because the scrapping outside the EU contradicted the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Waste and its Disposal . After the transfer to Roland Shipping, based in Hamburg, approval was given to sail. The new owners stated that they would not scrap the ship but have it overhauled at a shipyard in Bulgaria . On December 15, 2015, the ship arrived in Alang for demolition by Priya Blue Industries.
