The Carnival Liberty (dt. Independence ) is a post-Panamax - cruise ship of the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line . She was put into service as the fourth ship of the Conquest class and differs from her predecessors in that the machinery is completely different.

history

Construction and commissioning

While the type ship of the Conquest class was still under construction, the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line and the Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri signed a letter of intent on June 29, 2002 for the construction of the fourth cruise ship of the class. Construction began on June 1, 2004. Despite extensive technical changes - the ship was equipped with a completely new machine system - compared to the other ships of the Conquest class, the Carnival Liberty with hull number 6111 was built in just 24 months at the Italian shipyard Fincantieri in Monfalcone . After nine months in the construction dock, the ship floated up in late December 2004 and was moved to the equipment quay for completion. After the Carnival Liberty was christened on July 19, 2005 in Civitavecchia by the Italian-American actress Mira Sorvino , the ship was handed over to the owner company the following day.

commitment

The Carnival Liberty was the shipping company's first ship to be stationed in the Mediterranean . In summer 2005 she headed for destinations in the Mediterranean from the base port of Civitavecchia . In October 2005, the ship was stationed in Fort Lauderdale after its first Atlantic crossing .

According to the original plans, the Carnival Liberty should return to destinations in Europe after crossing the Atlantic in May 2009. Dover and Civitavecchia were planned as base ports . Due to the financial crisis, however, the shipping company decided to continue using the ship for one-week Caribbean cruises.

On September 7th, a fire broke out in the engine room of the ship during a Caribbean tour during a port stay in Charlotte Amalie on Saint Thomas , which could be extinguished. The ship could not continue its voyage, the passengers were flown out.

Machine system and drive

With the construction of the Carnival Liberty , a fundamental modernization of the machinery for the subsequent ships of the Conquest class was completed. The licensed builds of the Sulzer ZA40S series that were still installed on the predecessor ships were replaced by six V-12-cylinder engines of the newly developed 46 series from the Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä . Despite reduced fuel consumption and lower pollutant emissions, the performance of the machine system increased by approx. 20% compared to the previous system.

In the conventionally designed propulsion system with shaft system , fixed propeller and rudder, the propeller motors previously used have been replaced by more powerful new developments from the French company Alstom .
