Charlotte Amalie, United States Virgin Islands , is located on the south side of the island of Saint Thomas and is the capital of the American Virgin Islands . The city is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of the Virgin Islands and the Roman Catholic diocese of Saint Thomas .

history

Charlotte Amalie was the capital of the Danish West Indies . In this city there was one of the first Jewish communities in the New World , as evidenced by the second oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere .

In 1666 the Danes made the first attempts at colonization and planted plantations. In 1679 the Skytsborg Tower was built.

The city was named by the pirate Nicolaj Esmit in 1691 after Queen Charlotte Amalie (1650-1714), wife of King Christian V of Denmark . The settlement was previously called Christiansfort . During the South American Wars of Independence , Charlotte Amalie was declared a free port in 1804 . Major General Casimir Wilhelm von Scholten , after whom the town's market square is named, died in the town in 1810 .

In 1917, the United States of America bought Danish West Indies, and with it the island of Saint Thomas of Denmark, for $ 25 million. This made Charlotte Amalie an American city.

Tourism and transport

On the south-western outskirts of the city is the Cyril E. King Airport with domestic flights to many cities in the USA. There is also a seaplane port , the Yacht Haven Grande and the Crown Bay Marina . The city is home to the Lionel Roberts Park Stadium , home of the US Virgin Islands National Football Team .

The main attraction in town is the Fort Christian , which in 1671 by the Danish King Christian V was built.
