The Carnival Spirit (dt. Geist, Seele, Mut) is the type ship of the Spirit class , a series of six Panamax cruise ships that was developed for the American tourism group Carnival Corporation & plc . It was built at the Kvaerner Masa Yards AB shipyard in Helsinki .

Construction and commissioning

On February 24, 1998 the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line and the shipyard Kvaerner Masa Yards AB signed the contract to build the Carnival Spirit . The keel of hull number 499 was laid on November 16, 1999 at the shipyard in Helsinki. On July 7, 2000 the ship floated for the first time and was then relocated to the equipment quay and completed. The first test runs on the Baltic Sea follow in January 2001. On April 11, 2001, the Carnival Spirit was handed over to the shipping company and left Helsinki the next day for Miami , where it arrived on April 24. The ship was christened on April 27, 2001 by the American politician Elizabeth "Liddy" Dole .

Machine system and drive

The Carnival Spirit is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system. It consists of six diesel generator sets that are spatially separated into two independent groups. The engines are low-emission 9-cylinder, 4-stroke in-line engines of the Wärtsilä 9L46D type .
First of all, one of these engines was equipped with the "EnviroEngine" technology, which should no longer generate any visible exhaust gases under any operating condition. After successful tests during cruises in the waters around Alaska, another engine was converted.

The Carnival Spirit include not only the Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise , the first cruise ships, with two built-in the rear to 360 ° rotating azimuth thruster type ABB were equipped "azipod". This drive technology ensures very good maneuvering properties, particularly quiet driving behavior and a low level of vibration on board.

Facility

The ship offers space for up to 2,680 passengers on 12 decks and in 1,000 cabins. The suites are located in the stern area and midships. There are various leisure activities available to guests during the journey, including four swimming pools, a casino, mini golf, a karaoke bar and a fitness center. 80% of the cabins are on the outside; 80% of these have a balcony.

Routes

Carival Spirit in Sydney 2013

The Carnival Spirit was the first "fun ship" to go to Alaska and Hawaii. Meanwhile, the Carnival Spirit navigates the waters around Alaska during the summer months (mid-May to late September) and stops in Ketchikan , Juneau , Skagway and Victoria . The ship previously moored in Sitka , sailed the Lynn Canal and Prince William Sound and visited various glaciers from Vancouver and Whittier on weekly tours .

Her maiden season in Australia began in October 2012  - she is the first Carnival ship for the Australian market. All year round she travels from Sydney to destinations in Australia, New Zealand and the South Seas .
