geography

The deep-water port of Port Canaveral is located on Merritt Island , an island in Brevard County on the east coast of Florida in Canaveral Bay. The port entrance for seagoing ships is around 13 kilometers long and the waterway is up to 12.5 meters deep. North of the port is Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and the Kennedy Space Center .

history

Efforts to moor a port on Merritt Island go back to 1878, when the United States Navy submitted a request to the United States Congress . However, the project was not permitted until 1929. Construction began in 1951 and on November 4, 1953, the port, designed for military and civil purposes, was opened. The first industry to settle in the port area was commercial fishing . In the 1960s, mainly oil, paper products and orange juice were shipped. In 1966 one million tons of freight were handled; the share of petroleum products was around 93%.

The cruise operation began in the early 1970s. The first cruise terminal opened in 1982 and the SS Scandinavian Sea was the first passenger ship to be stationed in Port Canaveral. The port is used as a cruise base for several shipping companies, including Carnival Cruise Lines , Disney Cruise Line , Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean International .

With the start of space missions from the nearby Kennedy Space Center , the port's importance also increased. In 1965, the Canaveral Lock, which connects the harbor basin with the Banana River, was put into operation to transport large rocket fragments across the harbor to the Kennedy Space Center. During the space shuttle program , the external tank was brought to Port Canaveral and the solid-fuel rockets , which were dropped over the Atlantic during the launch phase and recovered, were also transported back via the military part of the port area.
