The Disney Magic
Pier on Castaway Cay Island with Disney Magic

Disney Cruise Line is the name of a cruise business that the Walt Disney Company is one of the department and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is assigned.

General

The Disney Cruise Line has four cruise ships , the Disney Magic , the Disney Wonder , the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy , as well as a private island in the Bahamas called Castaway Cay . The island has an exclusive port where these ships can dock.

The four ships are geared towards family vacations and thus aim to target families with small children. This distinguishes a vacation here from many other cruise lines that are frowned upon as “senior travel”.

The ships usually start at Port Canaveral in Florida , but sometimes also in Puerto Rico or Galvestone, Texas, and travel on a specific route through the Caribbean to Castaway Cay. For the sea voyage there is the possibility of booking a combination with a stay at the Walt Disney World Resort .

Most cruises last 4 to 7 nights, with the exception of the California route, in which the ship sails from Florida to California via the Panama Canal , the Hawaii route between Vancouver and Honolulu, and the transatlantic route between the US and Europe.

Since May 2007 the Disney Magic (4 stars) has also been sailing in the Mediterranean Sea as well as in the North and Baltic Seas in summer (between May and September). The ports of call include Barcelona, Dover and Copenhagen, further stations in Europe are Estonia, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain and Sweden.

history

The shipping company was founded in 1995 when the Walt Disney Company wanted to expand their vacation package and chose the sea as their vacation spot. After the decision and founding, two ships were ordered from Fincantieri in Venice in Italy , the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder , which were delivered considerably later than planned. A joint inauguration with Disney's Animal Kingdom therefore did not take place.

In April 2007, two more cruise ships, the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy , were ordered from Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Lower Saxony . They each have 1,250 cabins, doubling their previous capacity. The two cruise ships are around 340 meters long and 37 meters wide and have a measurement of around 130,000 GT . This made them the largest cruise ships ever built in Germany when they were delivered. This meant that they could not pass the Panama Canal when it was put into service , which was a requirement for the first two ships.

On December 9, 2011, hitherto unknown perpetrators, but workers who were employed on the Disney Fantasy , damaged 48 cabins of the cruise ship by opening fire extinguishing systems. On decks 12 and 11, several fire extinguishing systems were turned on several times, and later the sewage taps were opened, causing the sewage to run out on deck 11. The damage was estimated at around one million euros.

In March 2016, Disney Cruise Line ordered two more newbuildings from Meyer Werft. They should be measured with 135,000 GT and have 1,250 cabins. Delivery is planned for 2021 and 2023. In July 2017, an identical ship was ordered for delivery in 2022. The new buildings should have an LNG drive. The first ship will be named Disney Wish .

In March 2020, Disney Cruise Line canceled all trips until at least April 12, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
