history

Construction and commissioning

The Disney Magic was the first new construction project of the shipping company at the Fincantieri -Werft in Marghera , a district of Venice . Construction of the ship with the number 5989 began in autumn 1996, with the hull - consisting of two separate sections - being prefabricated in Ancona (bow half) and in Marghera (stern half). The merging of the two units, the expansion and completion took place in Marghera. The launch took place on April 12, 1997. Problems during the construction period delayed the commissioning of the ship by about half a year. After the final completion, the Disney Magic left the shipyard on July 1, 1998 and arrived on July 15, 1998 in her home port of Port Canaveral . There she was christened on July 28, 1998 by Patricia Disney, the then wife of Roy E. Disney , and began cruise operations on July 30, 1998.

During several stays in the dry dock of the Norshipco shipyard in Norfolk , the Disney Magic was extensively renovated and modernized on a regular basis.

commitment

After the Disney Magic was temporarily used on the US west coast, it now runs from Port Canaveral to destinations in the Caribbean. During the spring and summer months, cruises are operated in the Mediterranean (base port Barcelona ) and Northern Europe (base port Dover ). On July 9, 1999, the ship left for its 100th cruise.

Machine system and drive

The ship is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system. Five generator sets supply the Disney Magic with electrical energy. Each generator is coupled with a V16-cylinder diesel engine developed by Sulzer with an output of 11,520 kW (approx. 15,670 hp). The actual propulsion of the ship is conventional with a shaft system and rudder. The two General Electric propeller motors each drive a 4-blade fixed propeller (diameter approx. 5.50 m, weight approx. 18.8 tons each). Three transverse thruster control systems in the bow and two in the stern serve as a maneuvering aid at low speeds . In order to dampen rolling movements, the ship is equipped with a pair of fin stabilizers .

Design, cabins and on-board facilities

The concept of Disney Magic and the layout of the cabins have been tailored to the needs of families with children. The external appearance with a black hull was designed based on the classic ocean liners and differs significantly from the appearance of other modern cruise ships with its round shape with large portholes and the streamlined superstructure. The color scheme in red, black and yellow corresponds to the colors of the Walt Disney Company . The Disney Magic has been the first passenger ship to be equipped with two chimneys since the nineties, although the exhaust gases from the machinery only escape through the rear one, while the front one is only a dummy and belongs to the publicly accessible areas. The red chimney screens are decorated with white contours of Mickey Mouse . A larger than life sculpture by Goofy hangs horizontally in front of the stern of the ship on a rope that is only barely attached to his work suit; the figure, equipped with a giant brush and two pots of paint for her daring action, seems to have just finished painting the ship's side with the official ship emblem "Disney Magic Nassau".

There are 877 cabins in different categories on the Disney Magic . Around two thirds of these are outside cabins, some with a balcony. The size of the cabins is between 17 and 28 m². With a few exceptions, all accommodations can be occupied by up to four passengers. Special family cabins are designed for five passengers. The 22 luxuriously furnished suites are located on deck 8 and offer space for up to seven people in living areas between approx. 57 to 88 m² (“1-bedroom” and “2-bedroom suite”). The two “Royal Suites” (“Walter E. Disney Suite” and “Roy O. Disney Suite”) with an area of around 95 m² are particularly noteworthy. 16 cabins are available for passengers with physical disabilities. Depending on the specific equipment of the ship, accommodation is available for over 3,600 passengers (the “Complete Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships” mentioned a maximum of 3,325 passengers in 2006).

The interior combines elements of Art Deco style with typical Disney themes and characters. In the three-story, lavishly decorated atrium there is an approximately 1.80 m tall bronze statue showing Mickey Mouse as the helmsman . The chandelier was designed by the artist Dale Chihuly . The design of the public areas is reminiscent of the Radio City Music Hall in New York City . The main theater extends over three decks and offers space for around 1,000 spectators. In contrast to many other cruise ships, there is no casino on board .

Trivia

  • While the Disney Magic is leaving a harbor, the ship's horn plays the first seven notes of the song " When You Wish upon a Star " from the movie Pinocchio .
  • Contrary to current regulations, the ship's lifeboats are painted yellow - a parallel to Mickey Mouse's yellow shoes . The shipping company needed a special permit for this color scheme.
  • Around 2,200 km of cables were laid during the construction period.
  • There are around 1,850 telephones installed on board.
  • An anchor weighs approx. 14 tons.
  • The guests on the maiden voyage were selected in a lottery in February 1997.
