history

In March 2015, Meyer Werft and Carnival Corporation & plc signed a letter of intent for the construction of four ships with delivery between 2019 and 2022. On June 15, 2015, four ships with delivery in 2019 and 2020 were ordered, two of which for AIDA Cruises and two for another brand of Carnival Corporation not mentioned at this point in time. Finally, at the end of July, it was announced that the other two ships for Costa Crociere were to come into service.

In September 2016, three more ships were ordered for P&O Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line , with delivery in 2020 and 2022, the delivery of the second ship for AIDA Cruises and Costa Crociere was postponed to 2021.

The burning start for the first ship of the Helios class, the AIDAnova , took place on February 21, 2017 . Also in February, the silhouette of the ship class was presented using a laser cut. The AIDAnova was laid down on September 4, 2017 and handed over to AIDA Cruises on December 12, 2018.

The construction of the Costa Smeralda began on September 13, 2017.

In January 2018, another ship was ordered for P&O Cruises with delivery in 2022.

In February 2018, another ship was ordered for AIDA Cruises with delivery in 2023.

Construction of the first ship for P&O Cruises with hull number S.710 began on April 25, 2018. On May 24, 2018, the name of the ship, Iona , was announced.

Construction of the first ship for Carnival Cruise Line began on November 15, 2018.

technology

The new class of ship can be operated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) as well as with classic diesel. In contrast to the previously built Hyperion class ships, the Helios class ships have liquefied natural gas tanks and can therefore also be operated with liquefied natural gas on the water. Unlike the dual-fuel engines currently in operation, the Caterpillar 16 VM 46 DF engines can be started directly with liquefied natural gas. As a result, particle emissions and nitrogen oxide emissions are already considerably reduced in the port.

The AIDAnova was the first cruise ship to be awarded the Blue Angel for environmentally friendly ship design in August 2019 . In the 2019 NABU cruise ranking, the AIDAnova and the Costa Smeralda landed together in first place, although NABU continues to criticize the climate footprint of these ships.

For emergencies, the new class of ship is equipped with two Caterpillar 3516C HD emergency diesel engines, each with an output of 2095 kW at 1800 rpm, each of which can maintain the ship's emergency functions on its own.

From 2021 fuel cells are to be used for test purposes at the AIDAnova .
