The Aida Nova is a cruise ship the Helios class of Carnival Corporation & plc . It entered service for the AIDA Cruises brand in December 2018 . In 2019, it was the first cruise ship to be awarded the Blue Angel for environmentally friendly ship design.

General

The AIDAnova is the first ship in the Helios class. These are cruise ships that are being built on behalf of Carnival Corporation & plc by Meyer Werft GmbH in Papenburg, Meyer Turku in Turku and Neptun Werft in Rostock .

The ship is the first cruise ship that can be operated entirely on liquid natural gas (LNG) . The supply of the ship with the lowest emission marine fuel is made for the Canaries Tour in Tenerife by the LNG - tanker cardissa by Shell.

history

After AIDA Cruises had seven Sphinx-class ships built at Meyer Werft between 2007 and 2013 , two Hyperion-class ships were built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan between 2013 and 2017 . However, the next three ships for AIDA Cruises will again come from the German Meyer Werft. In March 2015, Carnival Corporation & plc and Meyer Werft agreed a letter of intent for four ships with delivery between 2019 and 2022, before this was converted into an order on June 15, 2015. Contrary to the original plan, the AIDAnova was not delivered at the beginning of 2019, but at the end of 2018.

The first steel cut, which marked the start of construction of the ship, took place at the Meyer shipyard on February 21, 2017. The keel laying of the AIDAnova took place on September 6, 2017.

Two midship sections were built at the Neptun shipyard in Rostock and transferred to the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg in September and December 2017 .

As part of Meyer Werft's construction strategy , a first 140 meter long section was undocked on December 11, 2017. A second section followed on February 16, 2018 to allow the Norwegian Bliss to undock . Both sections were then re-docked. On August 21, 2018, the ship left the construction dock.

The AIDAnova was christened on August 31, 2018 in Papenburg . The ship was transferred to Eemshaven from October 8 to 9, 2018 .

On the night of October 23 to 24, 2018, there was a fire on board in Eemshaven. The Dutch police are investigating whether the cause of the fire in two cabins was due to arson. The handover to the client, initially planned for November 15, 2018 in Bremerhaven, has been postponed, as have the first test drives. According to the shipyard, there are other reasons for the delay in addition to the fire. From November 6, 2018 to November 13, the ship went on the first test voyage from Eemshaven.

The maiden voyage was originally supposed to take place on December 2nd from Hamburg to the Canary Islands . On November 16, 2018 it was announced that the planned maiden voyage and the following voyages will not take place. The delivery of the ship was scheduled for the second week in December. According to the shipyard, the reason for the delayed completion is that the public areas of the ship, for example the theater, were not completed. The shipyard emphasized that the LNG drive was not the cause of the delays and that it worked.

On the evening of November 16, 2018, the AIDAnova left Eemshaven for the second test run, it ended there on November 24, 2018. On December 2, 2018, the ship completed its third test run, which ended again on December 4, 2018 in Eemshaven. The ship was delivered in Bremerhaven on December 12, 2018 . On the same day the ship left Bremerhaven and was transferred to Tenerife on December 16, 2018 in Lisbon with one interruption . There the ship was put into service on December 19, 2018 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

Furnishing

The AIDAnova houses 16 restaurants - in addition to the market restaurant , East Restaurant, Bella Donna Restaurant and brewery known for the AIDA fleet , it also includes other specialty restaurants for fish dishes, Asian cuisine and burgers. There are also 23 bars for various drinks and snacks. The entertainment program includes a climbing path, a water slide, the Theatrium, which is known for AIDA ships, the Studio X with 500 seats, in which TV shows can be produced, and an escape room (mystery room) . On deck 18 there is a sun deck with a pool. Similar to the AIDAprima, part of the pool area has a foil roof.

The hotel part of the Aida Nova total includes 21 cab variants of single cabins with balcony cabins to spacious penthouse - suites .
