The AIDAdiva is a cruise ship operated by Carnival Corporation & plc . It is used for trips under the AIDA Cruises group brand , which is specially geared towards the German market . It is operated under the Italian flag by Costa Crociere in Genoa .

She is the first of seven largely identical ships of the Sphinx class . At the time of commissioning, the AIDAdiva was the largest ship in the AIDA fleet.

history

Construction and overpass

After the restructuring of the group in the course of the merger of the American Carnival Corporation with the British P&O Princess Cruises , to which the AIDA brand belonged until then, the newly created world market leader regarded the European, but especially the German market as far too little exhausted . In addition to the transfer from the British to the American group, an extensive development program for AIDA Cruises was decided under the operational responsibility of the Italian subsidiary Costa Crociere. In October 2004, the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg ( Emsland ) was commissioned to build initially two new, significantly larger AIDA cruise ships. The third generation “club ships” were to provide almost double the number of cabins at 68,500  GT and were to be delivered in April 2007 and April 2009 respectively.

AIDAdiva in the construction dock (April 2006)

With the cutting of the first steel plate, the construction of the still unnamed cruise ship began on October 25, 2005 under the project name AIDA SPHINX I. The keel was laid under construction number S. 659 on March 3, 2006 in Papenburg. On this occasion the final name was announced. During the traditional coinage ceremony, the winner of the naming competition placed a coin among the first of a total of 55 building blocks. After about eleven months of construction, the ship was first floated on September 28, 2006.

After functional tests and machine trials had been successfully completed, the AIDAdiva left the covered building dock on March 4, 2007 and was transferred to the equipment quay , where it was expanded and finally completed. The transfer of the ship across the Ems to Emden took place on March 10, 2007. Since the final equipment has been taking place in Emden for the first time since 1995, the city celebrated the arrival of the ship in the outer harbor with torches on the dike and fireworks. On March 11, 2007, the AIDAdiva set sail for a first test run in the southern North Sea . On the evening of March 12, 2007, she passed the large sea lock Emden in the port of Emden and moored at the marine quay for final work. On April 16, 2007, the AIDAdiva was handed over to the shipping company in Emden and left the port on the same day for Hamburg , where it arrived two days later. The ship's crew was trained in the period from the transfer on the Ems to the christening on board.

The graphic artist Feliks Büttner designed the typical paint finish with mouth, eyes and eyeliner in 1996.

baptism

Baptism of AIDAdiva on April 20, 2007 in Hamburg

During the “AIDA Days”, which took place between April 18 and 22, 2007, the AIDAdiva was christened in the Port of Hamburg . On this occasion, the shipping company commissioned the Berlin theater director Gert Hof to stage a 45-minute light and laser show to accompany the christening ceremony. While the ship was cruising the Elbe on the evening of April 20, 2007, flares in the colors of the brand were shot over the ship on the route from the “Cruise Center” in HafenCity to the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken . At the fish auction halls, Maria Galleski, who was chosen by the readers of a Hamburg newspaper, gave the christening of the ship . According to the organizers, the celebrations on the banks of the Elbe were followed by around 350,000 people. On April 30, 2007, the AIDAdiva started on her eleven-day maiden voyage from Hamburg to Palma .

incident

On the evening of July 7, 2014, fragments of rockets fell on the deck of the ship as it left Ashdod . The debris may have come from Israeli anti-aircraft missiles fired from the Gaza Strip during the bombardment of Israel .

Machine system, drive and operating technology

The AIDAdiva is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system in which four diesel generators serve as a power plant and supply the entire ship with electrical energy. All electrical systems, the drive system and the monitoring equipment were developed and built by Siemens . In order to guarantee maximum operational safety, the machine and drive systems are technically and spatially divided into two independent groups and equipped with extensive monitoring equipment ( ship automation system "SISHIP CIS PAX").

power supply

The engines with which the main generators are driven are long-stroke , medium-speed 9-cylinder, 4- stroke diesel engines of the Caterpillar - MaK 9M43C type, each with an output of 9,000 kW (approx. 12,140 PS). They can be operated with low-sulfur diesel or heavy fuel oil and produce hardly any exhaust gases under any operating condition . Each engine is 10 meters long, 6 meters high and weighs approximately 126 tons. With a machine utilization of 85%, the AIDAdiva uses around 140 tons of fuel per day.

The four Siemens main generators each generate an electrical output of 12,000  kVA and supply the entire ship with electrical energy via two 11 kV switchgear and eight distribution transformers (output: 1,000–3,500 kVA).

drive

The AIDAdiva is equipped with a conventionally constructed drive system. In the two propeller engines is 3-phase synchronous machines of the type Siemens 1DM5650-8DS06-Z, the (PS ca. 16,900), a power output of 12,400 kW via a shafting to 5-leaf fixed propeller transmitted. Each propeller has a diameter of 5.2 meters and a mass of approximately 13.2 tons. At a maximum speed of 130 rpm, the ship reaches a top speed of 21 knots.

For maneuvering in harbors and at low speeds, two transverse thrust control systems each with an output of 2,300 kW (approx. 3,100 hp) and 1,500 kW (approx. 2,040 hp) are installed in the bow and stern . With dynamic positioning , the ship is able to maintain a given position precisely.

bridge

AIDAdiva tender boats

For navigation , control and monitoring of the operation of ships is Aida Diva equipped with a so-called "integrated bridge system". Using the "NACOS 65-5" system from the manufacturer SAM Electronics , all relevant information (e.g. radar image , electronic nautical charts , operating parameters of the machine system) is displayed on high-resolution color screens.

Safety devices

The AIDAdiva is divided into five fire compartments. In the event of an evacuation , six tender boats , 14 lifeboats , two express rescue boats (“man over board” boats) and four escape slides (“marine evacuation system”) are available. The tender boats are also used for landing when the ship is in the roadstead .

Cabins and on-board facilities

Cabins

The AIDAdiva has a total of 1,025 passenger cabins of various categories, 666 of which are outside cabins (approx. 65%), the majority of which have a balcony.
