Ocho Rios is a small town in northern Jamaica . The city is located in County Middlesex in the Parish Saint Ann . In 2010, Ocho Rios had a population of 9,583 people. The name Ocho Rios comes from the Spanish and literally means "eight rivers".

geography

Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is located in a long bay that is divided into several small bays. At the west end of the city is the White River Bay , into which the river of the same name flows. Sandbeach Bay begins behind a small headland and runs very straight from west to east. Mallards Bay next to it eats its way deeper than the other bays into the country. Most of the hotels and the marina are also located here. At the eastern end of the city is Ochriis Bay . This is also where Dunn's River Falls are located , one of the island's biggest tourist attractions. The name Ocho Rios is misleading, as only three instead of the eight which the name suggests, flow into the bay. The city is surrounded by dense jungle.

The next larger cities are Tower Isle to the west and Steer Town to the east .

history

On October 30, 1657, the Battle of Ocho Rios took place. Spanish troops under Cristóbal Arnaldo Isasi tried to recapture the island, which was lost to the English crown in 1655. However, the attack was successfully repulsed.

The place was a small fishing village until the beginning of the 19th century until Ocho Rios became a focal point for tourists, mainly from the USA and Europe. It is often mistakenly assumed that Christopher Columbus set foot ashore here for the first time. The fallacy is reinforced by Columbus Park, a little out of town, which tourists and locals can visit, where Columbus supposedly first came ashore. There you can see maritime artefacts and Spanish colonial buildings.

Economy and tourism

The bay of Ocho Rios is primarily approached by cruise ships, especially because of the Dunn's River Falls and other tourist attractions, such as the craft market (local handicrafts or merchandise), rafting on the White River, not far from Ocho Rios. Since 2003 the place has also been approached by the ships of the German shipping company AIDA Cruises . Almost 400,000 tourists visit the place every year. Several shopping malls complete the offer for tourists.

Some music studios have settled in Ochi (slang for Ocho Rios), such as B. Prezident Brown on James Avenue near the old blue clock. Some UB40 albums were produced in the recording studio in Coyaba Park, a paradise garden above Ocho Rios. Even Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones each have a house in the mountains above Ochi.
