The AIDAvita is a cruise ship from the world market leader for cruises Carnival Corporation & plc and has been in use for the AIDA Cruises group brand, which is specially geared towards the German market, since delivery in April 2002 . She was built as the second ship in the AIDA fleet at Aker MTW Werft in Wismar and is identical in construction to the AIDAaura , her sister ship , which is one year younger .
The AIDAvita sails under the Italian flag and has been part of the Costa Crociere fleet in Genoa since November 2004 , which, as the Southern European agency of the Carnival Group, jointly controls the “AIDA Cruises” and “Costa Kreuzfahrten” brands. The newly founded subsidiary Carnival Maritime GmbH in Hamburg has been responsible for operational ship operations since July 2015.
history
Order and construction
The group of companies around the Deutsche Seereederei in Rostock, privatized after reunification , which from 1994 tried to transfer the concept of club holidays to ship trips in the German tourism business, stood with its newly created brand AIDA and the first ship of the same name at the end of the 1990s just before bankruptcy. Arkona Touristik GmbH , which was in charge of the group in 1999 , therefore transferred its cruise business to a joint venture under the leadership of P&O in London. Immediately after the conclusion of the contract, the construction of two more ships for the expansion of the brand was commissioned.
The new owner P&O had already taken over the joint venture in full through a share swap, even before the first of the two new ships, the AIDAvita , was handed over by Aker MTW Werft. Doris Schröder-Köpf , the wife of the Federal Chancellor at the time, was the godmother at the christening ceremony on the Warnow in Warnemünde on May 4, 2002 . Pop stars DJ Bobo and No Angels provided entertainment during the ceremony .
In the course of the spin-off of all of P & O's cruise activities to P&O Princess Cruises International Ltd. this was entered in the shipping register on April 30, 2002 as the new owner of AIDAvita . From February 2004 the ship belonged to Carnival plc. which P&O Princess Cruises had renamed itself in order to form today's world market leader Carnival Corporation & plc together with the American Carnival Corporation.
At the end of 2004, the AIDA fleet and brand responsibility were transferred from Carnival plc. transferred within the group to Costa Crociere in Genoa and the flags of the ships changed from the English to the Italian flag.
commitment
On May 17, 2002, the ship started its maiden voyage from Hamburg to Heraklion , Greece .
Since the end of 2004, the AIDAvita has been used in the Caribbean in the winter months and predominantly in the Mediterranean in the summer.
Conversions
In December 2011, the AIDAvita was rebuilt and renovated in the Cantieri del Mediterraneo shipyard in Naples . In addition to the normal renovations, a club area has been set up for children, an art gallery opened, the Anytime Bar completely renovated and the Body & Soul area equipped with new fitness equipment.
From November 3 to 9, 2014, during a routine stay in dry dock at the same shipyard, the first installation work for retrofitting a multi-stage filter system, also known as a “ scrubber ”, was carried out. This made the AIDAvita the third ship in the AIDA fleet to be equipped with this exhaust gas desulfurization technology.

Decks
- The tender gate is on deck 3 (exit to the pier or entry into the tender boats ). As on the sister ships, there is also the hospital as well as the warehouse for bicycle and diving equipment. In addition, there are six passenger cabins and areas for the crew on deck 3.
- Inside and outside cabins are located on deck 4. The mooring station is located in the aft area (stern) of this deck and is only accessible to the staff.
- There are further inside and outside cabins on deck 5. The deck for crew members, which is not accessible to passengers, is located in the aft ship.
- There are further cabins of different categories on deck 6. There are no balcony cabins on this deck because of an outside area with a railing. The tender and lifeboats are located above this. The reception with travel service and the Internet corner are located in the middle of the ship on deck 6 . At the rear is the Kids Club with its own children's pool.
- On deck 7 there are the balcony cabins and other outside cabins with restricted visibility due to the attachment of the tender and lifeboats. In the bow area there are two suites with a private sundeck. In the stern area of the ship is the Ocean Bar .
- There are no more cabins from deck 8. The theater is located in the bow area . At the theater entrance is the photo shop, the “AIDA Art Gallery”, with works by national and international artists such as Janosch , James Rizzi , Udo Lindenberg and Robert Nippoldt , a seminar room and the TV studio in which the on-board channel is produced. In the middle part of the ship is the star-shaped AIDA bar , the served restaurant ( Selection Restaurant ) and the ship's shop. A buffet restaurant ( market restaurant ) is located in the rear area.
- The second floor of the theater is located in the bow on deck 9. In the middle part of the deck, guests will find fitness facilities, the beauty salon and the golf simulator . In the rear area is the second buffet restaurant ( Calypso ) and the Nightfly Bar .
- The outside area of the AIDAvita begins on deck 10 . There is a volleyball court and a basketball hoop as well as the pool area with two whirlpools and a stage. The Hemingway Lounge is located on the aft ship and next to it is the Anytime Bar disco . You can also play shuffleboard on deck . In the bow of deck 10 is the teenagers club and the navigating bridge , which is not accessible to passengers.
- Deck 11 frames the pool area and offers additional berths for guests. The wellness area is located in the front area . In the rear area, the jogging course is attached around the chimney of the AIDAvita .
- Deck 12 offers the best view of the harbor entrances and exits. During the day there is the nudist area.
Routes
In the summer of 2016 and 2017, the AIDAvita sailed northern European waters from Kiel with 14-day routes to Iceland , Norway , the British Isles and the Baltic Sea . In winter 2016/2017, as in previous years, two routes were offered from Miami : a 10-day trip led to the eastern Caribbean and Florida , an 11-day trip to the Gulf of Mexico and the southern states .
Incidents
During a Baltic cruise in May 2016, there was an increased incidence of gastrointestinal complaints among passengers. The number of people affected varies between 5 and 200. The shipping company reported the occurrence of the norovirus to the authorities, which is only required if more than 2 percent of the passengers are affected. The guests had to leave the ship earlier than planned after arriving in Kiel, it was then disinfected and the new guests could only board after a delay.
