The AIDAstella is a cruise ship owned by the British-American Carnival Corporation & plc . The ship was built as the last ship of the modified Sphinx class at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg and has been in use for the AIDA Cruises group brand, which is specially geared towards the German market, since delivery in March 2013 .

The AIDAblu , the AIDAmar and the AIDAsol are identical sister ships.

Like the other AIDA ships, it sails under the Italian flag . Costa Crociere in Genoa is responsible for the operational cruise operations .

history

Procurement and construction

For the expansion of the AIDA Cruises brand, Carnival Corporation & plc ordered another Sphinx-class ship from Meyer-Werft in Papenburg on August 12, 2010 . The total of the seventh ship of this construction class and the fourth, whose construction plans have been extended by an additional half deck compared to the type ship AIDAdiva . According to the group, the price was 330 million euros. The AIDAstella was undocked on January 25, 2013 . On the night of February 9, 2013, the transfer of the AIDAstella began over the dammed Ems from Papenburg to Emden .

After years of harsh criticism from environmental protection associations, including above all the Naturschutzbund Deutschland , the company presented the AIDAstella as particularly environmentally friendly. In addition to lower consumption compared to the rest of the fleet, a system was installed for the first time to prevent organisms from entering foreign habitats via the ballast water and causing damage there. In addition, the AIDAstella was also the first ship in the AIDA fleet that was already intended for the use of shore power from the shipyard , as can be provided by the LNG hybrid barge operated in Hamburg . In actual use, however, in May 2015, when the barge, now also known as the “Hummel”, started operating, the sister ship AIDAsol preceded it .

The AIDAstella was the last newbuild in its class of ship. The AIDAprima was the first of two Hyperion-class cruise liners to be delivered in 2016 .

baptism

The christening took place on March 16, 2013 in Warnemünde . The godparents were eight employees of the cruise company and one employee each from the shipyard and the design office Partnership Design.

In 2013 and 2014, the AIDAstella took part in the Hamburg Cruise Days and in the celebration of the 825th  birthday of the Port of Hamburg .

Cabins and on-board facilities

The cabins, deck layouts and the equipment of the AIDAstella are based on the ships of the modified "Sphinx" class that have been realized so far. In addition to the seven restaurants, the AIDAstella also has an on-board brewery. As with the AIDAmar , the inside cabins of the AIDAstella are also equipped with flat screens to offer a sea view.

Routes

The original deployment in the eastern Mediterranean from Antalya was canceled due to safety concerns and replaced by the routes originally planned for AIDAaura in the western Mediterranean from Palma . Since the AIDAstella is too big for the ports in Nice , Propriano and Mahón on Menorca , these have been replaced by Villefranche-sur-Mer , Ajaccio and Olbia . The tours to France and Spain or France and Italy were alternated in the summer of 2016.

In the winter of 2016/2017, the AIDAstella went on one-week tours from Dubai in the Persian Gulf to Muscat , Abu Dhabi and Manama, as in the previous year . In summer 2017 she took over the previous 10-day summer route of AIDAblu as well as trips from Mallorca in the western Mediterranean. One of the new tours led to the south coast of Spain and Lisbon , the second to the south coast of France and northern Italy, and the third route included the larger islands in the western Mediterranean such as Malta , Sardinia and Ibiza .
