The AIDAmira is a cruise ship owned by the British - American Carnival Corporation & plc . After being taken over by its current owner, the ship was initially used for Ibero Cruceros and Costa Crociere as Costa neoriviera. With a new name, it was relocated within the Group to the fleet of the AIDA Cruises brand, which is geared towards the German market .

history

As Mistral for Festival Cruises in Kiel, May 2003

The ship was ordered in 1996 by the Greek Festival Cruises as their first newbuilding from the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique . The keel of the ship, built under construction number J31, was laid on January 28, 1997. It was delivered on June 23, 1999. It was initially launched as a Mistral .

However, the cruise line ran into financial difficulties. The ship was arrested in Marseille in January 2004 because of unpaid bills. On September 1, 2004, it was first sold to Auro Shipping and on May 31, 2005 to Mistral Shipping in Majuro on the Marshall Islands , renovated and renamed Grand Mistral . In September 2007, Societa Di Crociere Jupiter in Italy became the new owner. It was rebuilt and equipped with additional cabins and suites.

Immediately afterwards, the ship for Ibero Cruceros started sailing. After Carnival Corporation had fully taken over this business, which it initially operated as a joint venture with the Orizonia Corporation, which had emerged from the Iberostar Group, it transferred responsibility to its southern European subsidiary Costa Crociere SpA in Genoa. Under the Portuguese flag, Grand Mistral remained in the fleet aimed at the Spanish market until October 2013. After the corporate decision to discontinue the Spanish brand, Costa Crociere transferred the ship to the fleet operated under its own name at the end of November 2013 and used it as Costa neoRiviera .

At the end of 2019, the ship switched to the German brand AIDA Cruises and was converted in October and November 2019 in the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard in Genoa . The cost of the renovation was around EUR 55 million. At the end of November the ship was renamed AIDAmira . The ship was christened on November 30, 2019 in Palma de Mallorca by Franziska Knuppe . A subsequently planned short trip through the western Mediterranean was canceled at short notice because not all renovation work on board could be completed on time.

The first voyage of the AIDAmira from Palma de Mallorca to Cape Town, from where the ship was to set sail for a two-week trip around South Africa and Namibia, was also canceled shortly before its scheduled departure on December 4, 2019. The trip to South Africa took place without passengers; the arrival in Cape Town took place on December 19, 2019. On December 23, 2019, the ship set sail for the first cruise from Cape Town after the conversion to the AIDAmira .
