prehistory

The Fluxà family was initially only active in the manufacture of shoes. The shoemaker Antonio Fluxà traveled to England in 1877, studied industrial shoe production there and, on his return, founded the first shoe factory in the Balearic Islands with a group of shoemakers in Mallorca. Production with the Lottusse brand was taken over by his son Lorenzo Fluxá Figuerol at the age of 21, who was very committed to the expansion and, above all, internationalization of the company. In 1956 he acquired the small tour operator Viajes Iberia , which was founded in 1930 and has grown to 40 employees, and brought the family into contact with the travel industry for the first time.

Development of further business areas

Due to the good economic situation prevailing at the time and the rapidly increasing tourism in Spain , the travel company grew rapidly. Miguel Fluxà finally concentrated entirely on this area and founded the tour and excursion operator Iberojet in 1973, and six years later the incoming agencies Iberotravel with branches in the United Kingdom in London and Manchester and under the name Visit US in Miami and Orlando, Florida, in the USA . In 1986 he finally got into the hotel business and opened the first IBEROSTAR Hotels & Resorts on Mallorca and the Canary Islands .

In 1993 the first hotel complex was opened in the Dominican Republic . This was also the company's first 5-star resort. In 1998 the airline Iberworld was founded and offered charter flights from Madrid to Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife. Iberojet Cruceros was founded only a little later, initially specializing in Mediterranean cruises for the Spanish-speaking market through the joint venture Spanish Cruise Line with the Greek Festival Cruises, and later independently with two chartered ships.

In 2004 the company achieved sales of EUR 828.1 million with 54,490 beds, 15,600 employees and 500 travel agencies. In the same year the IBEROSTAR Foundation was founded.

In view of increasing economic difficulties in the following years, the family decided in 2006 to concentrate entirely on the hotel industry and only to continue the IBEROSTAR division . She left the other two corporate divisions, Grupo Receptor and Grupo Emisor , for EUR 800 million to the investment companies Carlysle Group at 55%, Vista Capital 36%, ICG Equity Fund 5% and around 4% to ten senior managers from the parts of the company affected by the sale . Numerous brands and company subsidiaries, including Solplan, Turavia or Viva Tours, the tour operator Iberojet, the travel agency network of Viajes Iberia, the airline Iberworld and the cruise operator Iberojet Cruceros have been transferred to the newly founded Orizonia Corporaciόn . As the buyers' new umbrella company, Orizonia initially continued to operate unchanged, but went bankrupt in 2013 and ceased operations on February 18, with more than 1,000 employees losing their jobs.

The new Grupo IBEROSTAR , which remained in the ownership of the family, only kept IBEROSERVICE in addition to the hotel and introduced the so-called “The Grand Collection” in 2007. Since then, the group’s luxury hotel complexes with at least 5 stars have been advertised under this new brand. In 2008 the company founded the new IBEROSTATE division for the real estate business ( golf, villas & condos ) in luxury holiday residences.

In 2015 the group acquired the Argentine online travel agency Almundo.com and NT Incoming , an incoming travel agency in the Spanish market.
