history

1986-1988: Homeric

The ship was built from 1984 to 1986 in Papenburg at the Meyer shipyard as Homeric for the Italian shipping company Home Lines and launched on September 28, 1985 with a cross- launch . The tonnage was 42,092 GT. She was the first cruise ship built by Meyer Werft and the only cruise ship that was launched at this shipyard. In contrast to all ships built later at Meyer Werft, the ship was still built outdoors.

1986 incident

On May 5, 1986, the ship began her crossing over the Ems. The ship collided with the Jann Berghaus Bridge in Leer .

On May 6, 1986, the ship was handed over to the Home Lines shipping company. She sailed under the Panama flag with her home port Panama .

1988-2002: Westerdam

The Westerdam

On November 27, 1988, the ship was taken over by Holland-America Line , renamed Westerdam and sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau . From October 1989 to March 1990 it was extended from 204.00 to 243.20 m at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg and completely renovated. The tonnage from then on was 53,872 GT. In 1997 she played the "leading role" in the film "Out to Sea" (in German " Tango pleased? ") With Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon . In 1996 the ship started sailing under the flag of the Netherlands with her home port Rotterdam .

2002–2010: Costa Europa

In April 2002 the ship was transferred to the sister company Costa Crociere and renamed Costa Europa . From then on she sailed under the Italian flag with her home port of Genoa . From January 7th to February 5th, 2006 she was in the dry dock of the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo ( Italy ) and was extensively renovated.

Incident 2010

On 26 February 2010, in bad weather , the ship rammed a jetty on the starboard side during a planned stop in Sharm El-Sheikh at 4:45 a.m. local time . The ship was on its way from Dubai to Savona with 1,473 passengers on board . In the accident , a three-meter hole was torn in the hull, killing three crew members and injuring four passengers. The Costa Europa was temporarily repaired in Egypt and transferred to the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo for complete repairs. After six weeks, the ship returned to cruise service. The IMO had not received an accident report by March 2012 , as the Italian investigation authorities said it was "strictly confidential".

2010-2017: Thomson Dream

The Thomson Dream at Blohm + Voss

Since April 2010 the ship has been chartered out to Thomson Cruises (a subsidiary of TUI UK Ltd.) for 10 years as Thomson Dream with a purchase option . Since then she has been sailing under the flag of Malta with her home port Valletta . On the way from the shipyard in Palermo to Barcelona , the Thomson Dream in Palma , the capital of the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca , picked up TUI guests who were unable to start their journey home due to flight restrictions due to the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 , and transferred them to Barcelona . The first official trip as Thomson Dream took place two days later, on April 29, 2010, and led from Palma via Livorno , to Villefranche-sur-Mer , via Barcelona and back to Palma.

Another renovation took place in November 2012 in the Elbe 17 dry dock of Blohm + Voss in Hamburg.
