First bridge

The previous bridge , built between 1948 and 1950, was the largest swing bridge in the world when it opened . It was demolished in 1991 because it was in disrepair. It was named Jann-Berghaus-Brücke after Jann Berghaus (1870–1954), who u. a. President of the East Frisian Landscape was and had been very committed to regional issues.

Second bridge

The second Jann Berghaus Bridge was built from 1989 to 1991. On May 17, 1991, the new bridge was put into service after a two-year construction period.

Broadening

The Ems is used by Meyer Werft in Papenburg to disembark the cruise ships built there. The Jann-Berghaus-Brücke represents an obstacle to shipping on the way to the North Sea, which is why Meyer Werft pushed ahead with widening the passage opening. Construction began in summer 2008 and was completed in spring 2010. On the east side of the existing bridge hatch (bascule), a river pier was demolished and rebuilt closer to the bank. An additional but smaller bridge hatch was then installed on top. The passage width has been increased to about 56 meters.

Data

The bridge is 464 meters long, from the west side it is 206 meters and from the east side 204 meters to the folding part. The approach bridge consists of 24 field bridges. The width between the railings is 12 meters and the width of the carriageway is 7 meters. The folding part is 63 meters long. When open, 45 meters of it is unfolded and 15 meters protrude into the bridge basement. The construction costs at the time were DM 40,100,000, which corresponds to a square meter price of DM 7,125.
