Festival Cruises was a Greece- based shipping company that operated several cruise lines from 1994 until it went bankrupt in 2004 .

history

The Mistral was the shipping company's first new building

Festival Cruises was founded in 1994 by the Greek shipowner George Poulides. The shipping company's first ship was The Azur , which was commissioned by the Greek shipping company Chandris in 1971 . In the following years Festival Cruises built a fleet of mostly older cruise ships that were mainly used for trips in the Mediterranean.

In 1999 the shipping company put its first new building into service with the Mistral . In 2001 and 2002 the larger sister ships European Vision and European Stars followed , which were based on the design of the Mistral and went to MSC Cruises after the dissolution of Festival Cruises . Two other sister ships were later put into service directly by MSC Cruises as MSC Lirica and MSC Opera .

In 2004 Festival Cruises filed for bankruptcy. The total of six ships in the fleet were then arrested and offered for sale after the shipping company was dissolved.
