The AIDAsol is a cruise ship owned by the British-American Carnival Corporation & plc . The ship was built as the second ship of the modified Sphinx class at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg and has been in use for the AIDA Cruises group brand, which is specially geared towards the German market, since delivery in March 2011 .

Costa Crociere in Genoa is responsible for operational cruise operations , which is why, like the other AIDA ships, it sails under the Italian flag . As the first ship in the fleet, the AIDAsol was equipped to be supplied with shore power from the LNG hybrid barge , which went into operation in May 2015 , while it was berthed in the Port of Hamburg . The AIDAblu , the AIDAmar and the AIDAstella are identical sister ships.

history

Procurement and construction

The stern of the AIDAsol

On December 13, 2007, Carnival Corporation & plc commissioned Meyer Werft in Papenburg to build two more cruise ships to put them into service with their AIDA Cruises brand in 2011 and 2012. The price per ship was given as 385 million euros. The keel-laying of the first ship with the project name AIDA SPHINX V took place under the construction number S. 689 on October 20, 2008. The name AIDAsol was only announced on November 6, 2009 at the shipyard. After the previously built ships AIDAdiva , AIDAbella , AIDAluna and AIDAblu , she was the fifth ship of the new AIDA generation. After the AIDAblu , this is the second ship in a modified design of this ship class, with an extension of half a deck. The second ship ordered with the same order as the SPHINX VI project followed a year later, named AIDAmar .

The AIDAsol was undocked on February 27, 2011, followed by the Ems overpass on March 11, 2011.

baptism

AIDAsol was christened on April 9, 2011 . For the first time, an AIDA Cruises ship was christened in Kiel. Also for the first time, the godmother had been selected in advance from among online applicants. In a selection show on board the AIDAsol during the so-called “AIDA fan trip” shortly before the christening, Bettina Zwickler from Kiel prevailed against the last two competitors in the final.

Captain

Since March 2018, the AIDAsol has been the first and so far (as of May 2018) only cruise ship in the AIDA fleet that is led by a female captain. Her name is Nicole Langosch. She studied nautical science at the seafaring school in Leer , earned a diploma in shipping logistics and worked on board a container ship for six months . She was an officer at Aida Cruises for several years. As staff captain, she was the captain's deputy and was responsible for the condition of the ship and the management of the sailors on board before she was finally appointed captain.

Machine system and drive

The ship is identical to the other ships of the modified Sphinx class. In July 2013 , the AIDAsol was the first ship in the AIDA Cruises fleet to be fully equipped for shore power . Assuming the necessary infrastructure on land, the ship can be supplied with shore power in the port area. Since May 2015, the ship has been using the LNG hybrid barge Hummel during stays in Hamburg . Since June 2016, the AIDAsol can also be supplied with electricity at the Altona cruise terminal via the shore power system.

LNG is in Hamburg current for the cruise ship AIDAsol generated

During a stay at the shipyard in December 2013, the two 5-blade fixed propellers of the AIDAsol were replaced by the integrated propeller-rudder system "Promas Lite" developed by Rolls-Royce. According to the manufacturer, the system reduces fuel consumption and improves maneuverability.

Cabins and on-board facilities

The ship has a total of 1,097 cabins, including 728 outside cabins. The spa area on the AIDAsol has been expanded by 450 m² compared to the AIDAdiva, AIDAbella and AIDAluna as with AIDAblu . 34 spa cabins with spacious balconies have direct access to the wellness area. The AIDAsol features as the previous sister ship AIDAblu its own microbrewery .

Routes

The AIDAsol was used for trips to Norway from the summers of 2016 to 2019. From Hamburg , the ship drove to the most important tourist destinations between Stavanger and Trondheim , including the Hardangerfjord and the Geirangerfjord, on a 10-day voyage . Two ports were even called on two days. Over the winter of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, the ship was on 7-day tours around the Canary Islands and sailed from Las Palmas on Gran Canaria to Madeira , Lanzarote , La Palma and Tenerife .

Like the AIDAblu , the AIDAsol made extended Canary Islands tours for the first time in 2016 at Christmas and New Year's Eve, which included destinations in the Canary Archipelago and Madeira as well as ports such as Lisbon , Cádiz and Casablanca .
