The Hyperion-Class is a series of two Neopanamax - cruise ships , specifically the US for the German market cruise operator Carnival Corporation & plc at the shipyard of the Japanese group Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki built and since 2016 AIDA Cruises are operated. The model ship of the Hyperion class is the AIDAprima , which was put into service in March 2016. The project was overshadowed by repeated delays, which led to the first two postponements of the type ship's maiden voyage and finally to its cancellation.

With a length of 300 meters and a width of almost 38 meters, the Hyperion class was the largest class of ships built for AIDA Cruises and the German-speaking cruise market to date. The characteristic features of the Hyperion ships with 18 decks are the almost vertical stem and the Panoramic elevators including a skywalk on both sides of the stern .

history

On August 3, 2011, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced the agreement with Carnival Corporation & plc to build two cruise ships at MHI Nagasaki Shipyard & Engine Works . The total price was given as 140,000 euros per lower bed; this corresponds to a real price of around 455 million euros per ship. In a global tender, the Japanese company prevailed against Meyer Werft in Papenburg , where the seven ships of the Sphinx class have been built since 2005 . As part of the signing of the building contract in early November 2011, the delivery of the new buildings was announced for March 2015 and March 2016. 12 March 2012 which confirmed energy and - automation technology - Group ABB a contract to deliver comprehensive electrical systems for the two new buildings. The scope of the project includes generators and transformers for propulsion, power distribution, the associated equipment for the power engineering systems and the "Azipod-XO" propulsion systems. The order volume was put at US $ 60 million. The keel-laying of the first ship with hull number 2300 at the Tategami shipyard in Nagasaki took place on June 30, 2013. At the beginning of July 2013, the MaK plant in Rostock became the first combined diesel / gas engine (so-called "dual fuel") Engine) of type M46DF was delivered to the shipyard. On October 8, 2013, AIDA Cruises officially announced the name of the first new building, AIDAprima . The AIDAperla was laid down in May 2014 and the name was announced in March 2016.

Losses due to delays in construction

The AIDAprima in April 2016 in Hamburg

On March 24, 2014, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced an extraordinary loss of around 425 million euros for the 2013 financial year in connection with the construction of the two cruise ships. Far-reaching changes, especially in the design of the cabin design, have exceeded the original budget and time frame, according to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

In October 2014 it became known that the second new building could not be delivered on time either. For 2014, the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard again made a loss of 283 million euros, the total loss of the shipyard in connection with the construction of the Hyperion class was 738 million euros up to then.

At the beginning of August 2015, AIDA Cruises confirmed that the delivery of the AIDAprima was delayed again. It finally left the shipyard on March 14, 2016 for Hamburg after being handed over to AIDA Cruises .

In total, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has suffered a loss of almost US $ 2.1 billion in connection with the Hyperion class so far (as of March 2017).

Ship technology

The Hyperion-class ships have an air lubrication system for the hull. For the first time, so-called “dual-fuel” engines are being used on cruise ships , which can be operated with diesel fuel at sea and alternatively with liquefied natural gas (LNG) during berthing times .

hull

The hull of the Hyperion class is the result of an intensive collaboration between the shipping company and the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute . In a series of tests it was shown that, especially at the projected service speeds between 15 and 17  knots, the flow resistance comes to the fore compared to the wave breakage component. The result was a slender waterline with a comparatively small bulbous bow and the vertical stem , which was continued above the waterline as a style element.

In addition, an air lubrication system developed by Mitsubishi for ships (“MALS”, abbreviation for “Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System”) is used. With this system, a large area of air is expelled under the fuselage, which is applied to the contour of the fuselage like a lubricating film and is intended to further reduce the flow resistance. The shipyard states a fuel saving of around seven percent.

Machine system

Refueling of the AIDAperla with liquid gas in the port of Barcelona

The diesel-electric machine system of the Hyperion class is the first of its kind to use a combined diesel / gas engine in addition to three conventional marine diesel engines. Each of these motors drives a three-phase generator, which supplies the electrical consumers on board with energy via switchgear and transformers.

Diesel / gas engine

The 12-cylinder V-engine of the type Caterpillar - MaK VM46DF was developed on the basis of the M43C series and works according to the diesel principle . At sea it can be operated with both heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine diesel oil (MGO). During lay times in ports, the unit can be switched to gas operation while it is running and then complies with the emissions standards IMO III and EPA Tier 4. Due to the principle, the engine works almost soot-free in gas operation and thus reduces the fine dust pollution of the air in the ports. The M46DF series has a displacement of 101 liters / cylinder and develops a cylinder output of 900 kW at a speed of 514 rpm. The engine weighs around 160 tons, is around ten meters long and four meters high.

Diesel engine

The three remaining 12-cylinder V-engines of the type Caterpillar - MaK M43C correspond in performance data, dimensions and weight of the M46DF series. The displacement is around 88 liters / cylinder. The series, which is already used in the ships of the Sphinx class as a nine-cylinder in-line engine, can be converted to the M46DF design version if necessary.

drive

As the first newbuildings for AIDA Cruises, the Hyperion class ships are powered by two newly developed propeller nacelles of the type ABB Azipod XO2100. The two all-round controllable systems are installed in the stern and enable particularly quiet driving behavior in conjunction with good maneuvering properties. In each nacelle there is an air-cooled synchronous motor with an exciter , which transmits an output of 14 MW (approx. 19,000 PS) directly to a fixed propeller pointing forward in the direction of travel . Compared to the Azipod propeller nacelles of previous generations, the XO systems are more aerodynamic and easier to maintain. It is no longer controlled by hydraulic drives, but by four electric gear motors each .

In September 2018 , after the manufacturer called back , the AIDAprima had to go to a shipyard for a necessary technical inspection of the Azipods.
