The Iona is a cruise ship under construction for the British shipping company P&O Cruises . The Helios-class ship is scheduled to be completed in May 2020. The Iona will thus be the largest ship from P&O Cruises.
history
After Carnival Corporation & plc had already ordered four ships from Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku in 2015 with delivery from 2019 to 2022, three more ships were ordered in September 2016 for P&O Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line with delivery in 2020 and 2022, including the Iona .
Construction of the ship began on April 25, 2018. The engine room section was built at the Neptun shipyard and transferred to Papenburg in February / March 2019 . As part of Meyer Werft's construction strategy , a 140-meter-long section was undocked on May 24, 2019 and re-docked in August 2019 after the Norwegian Encore had undocked .
The name Iona was announced on May 28, 2019 , after P&O Cruises had called for a name competition, the name Iona was selected from around 30,000 suggestions. The ship was named after the Scottish island of Iona .
The keel was laid on May 29, 2019 at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. The undocking and relocation to the equipment quay took place on the night of February 14, 2020.
On 18./19. March 2020 the ship was transferred to the North Sea via the Ems. After this had developed into a crowd puller in the past, the district of Leer issued a general order due to the coronavirus pandemic according to §§ 35 ff. VwVfG i. V. m. Section 1 (1) of the NVwVfG, which prohibited gatherings of people. Meyer Werft also asked possible onlookers to stay away.
After initial tests, the Iona arrived in Bremerhaven on March 20, 2020 . The tests at sea and the interior work were suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic to ensure the health of the employees. However, the authorities initially refused to allow employees to leave the ship.
From June 2nd to June 9th, the Iona was in the dry dock in Rotterdam for final inspection work.
The ship was originally due to be delivered in May 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
The construction costs amount to about 950 million US dollars .
Furnishing
The Iona will have 17 passenger decks and offer space for around 5200 guests in 2,600 cabins. It will be given a glazed “Grand Atrium” that extends over three decks. There will be a total of 17 restaurants on the Iona , eight of which are specialty restaurants, and 12 bars. The Iona will also be equipped with four swimming pools and 18 whirlpools.
technology
The Iona is the third ship in the Helios class , of which another ship is to be delivered for P&O Cruises in 2022. The ships can be operated with liquefied natural gas . For P&O Cruises it is the first ship with this technology.
