The Carnival Sunshine is a Panamax - cruise ship of the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line . At the time of commissioning in 1996, the type ship of the Destiny class was the first passenger ship with a gross tonnage of more than 100,000. This made her the largest cruise ship in the world and the first cruise ship to surpass the Queen Mary, built in 1936 . Until her stay in the shipyard in early 2013, when she was rebuilt for around 155 million dollars, she was in service under the name Carnival Destiny .

Construction and commissioning

The cruise ship was built with hull number 5941 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone near Trieste , Italy . The interior was designed by Joseph Farcus . The ship was delivered to Carnival Cruise Lines on October 19, 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny and entered in the ship register of Panama. After the baptism , which was carried out on October 24, 1996 in Venice by Lin Arison (wife of the shipping company founder Ted Arison), the transfer to Miami took place .

commitment

The cruise ship has been mainly in the Caribbean since its maiden voyage , which began in Miami on November 24, 1996 . In 2000 there was a change to the shipping register of the Bahamas . During her mission she was stationed in various base ports (e.g. from October 2006 to August / September 2008 in San Juan (Puerto Rico) ). After a brief renovation, the ship was moved to Miami.

From February to April 2013 the ship was rebuilt at Fincantieri and renamed Carnival Sunshine . It was then used in the Mediterranean between April and October and in the Caribbean during the winter months.

Trivia

  • The chimney is 23 m high and weighs around 25 t.
  • Over 200 tons of paint were required for the approx. 600,000 square meter surface of the ship.
