The Grand Celebration is a cruise ship on the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line .

history

The ship was built in 1987 by Kockums, Malmö for Carnival Cruise Lines and put into service as a Celebration . Home port was Monrovia, Liberia. The maiden voyage led from Miami to the Caribbean on March 14, 1987 .

In 2000 the ship was entered in the Panama Ship Register. Since April 2008 it has been sailing under the flag of Portugal as a Grand Celebration for Ibero Cruceros . Madeira became home port .

Conversion work began in Genoa on November 16, 2014 and it was planned to use the ship as a Costa Celebration for Costa Crociere from November 2014 . However, the ship never got going for Costa Crociere and all trips were canceled or moved to other ships. Instead, the ship was sold to the Celebration Cruise Line shipping company .

In 2015, the ship replaced the Bahamas Celebration on the Palm Beach - Freeport route , which was damaged in October 2014 . The shipping company Celebration Cruise Line was renamed Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line . The maiden voyage, scheduled for February 1, 2015, was canceled because the US Coast Guard arrested the ship due to safety deficiencies. On February 4, 2015, the ship was finally able to set sail for its first cruise fifty minutes late.

From September to December 2017, the ship was chartered by FEMA and used as accommodation in the wake of Hurricane Irma .

Incidents

On February 10, 1989, the ship collided about 20 nautical miles north of Punta Guarico off the east coast of Cuba with the maneuverable Cuban cement freighter Capitan San Luis . There were 45 crew members on board the freighter , three of whom were killed and one injured in the collision. 42 crew members were rescued from the Celebration , which returned to Miami after the clash. The damage to the Celebration was limited to a half-meter-long crack in the fuselage.

On June 18, 1995, about 22 nautical miles southeast of the island of San Salvador, a fire broke out in the engine control room, which could be extinguished with on-board resources, but made the ship incapable of maneuvering. After the Celebration , which was floating without on-board power, was initially towed further out to sea by the coast guard, the ship was towed to Freeport for repairs . The passengers were taken over by the cruise ship Ecstasy .

Five years later, on January 12, 2000, a fire broke out about 100 nautical miles northwest of Montego Bay in the auxiliary diesel room, which could also be extinguished with on-board resources. The ship, temporarily unable to maneuver, then went to Mobile for repairs, where it arrived on January 14th. At the end of the same year, on the night of December 11th to 12th, another fire broke out on board, which was extinguished by the fire extinguishing system. The ship went to Montego Bay for repairs and had to suspend two Caribbean tours.

In November 2004, an American passenger disappeared on board the ship. He was last seen on the night of November 23-24 and reported missing on arrival in Jacksonville the next morning . Since then he has been considered lost.

On August 15, 2006, the ship ran aground in Nassau . The ship was later released, but had to be repaired.

In 2007, two cartridges were found in the ship's lobby in the port of Jacksonville. It remained unclear how the cartridges got on board, although passengers and their luggage were checked for weapons and ammunition.

Technical specifications

The ship is propelled by two two-stroke, seven-cylinder diesel engines made by Sulzer with an output of 23510  kW , which act on two variable-pitch propellers . Three diesel generator sets with an output of 3000 kW ( apparent power 3750  kVA ) are available for power generation.
