Čopan ata (Turkish: çoban ata , German: father-shepherd ), also known in Persian sources under the name Kūhak , is a group of hills in the immediate vicinity of Samarkand on the south bank of the Serafshan . The name could also refer to an Islamic saint whose shrine could have been on the top of one of the hills. However, there is no reliable evidence of the naming before the 19th century.

On May 13, 1868, the troops of the Khan of Buḫārā on the Čopan ata started the unsuccessful attempt to push back the advancing Russian troops under General Konstantin Petrovich von Kaufmann . However, the following day Samarkand was conquered and from then on belonged to Russia.
