Celestyal Cruises (formerly Louis Cruises and Louis Cruise Lines ) is a Cypriot shipping company that has been operating mostly older cruise ships since it was founded in 1986.
history
Louis Cruise Lines was founded in 1986 as an offshoot of Touristik-Managements Louis plc, which has existed since 1935. The first ship was the Princesa Marissa , originally built as a ferry in 1965 , which entered service in 1987. The ship was mainly used for shorter cruises in the Mediterranean. In 1994 three more ships followed, which were also used for short trips. From the mid-1990s, Louis Cruise Lines worked with the British cruise operator Thomson Cruises and chartered several of its ships out of its five-ship fleet. Further charters to various shipping companies followed. In the following years, Louis Cruise Lines became the fifth largest operator of cruises.
In 2009 the name of the shipping company was officially changed to Louis Cruises. At the same time, the fleet was rejuvenated from 2010 onwards by decommissioning older ships and selling them for scrapping. At the beginning of 2014, all ships of the shipping company got a new hull painting. Louis Cruises was renamed again in September and has been called Celestyal Cruises ever since. One ship in the fleet, the Louis Aura , was operated under the name of Louis Cruises until 2016.
In 2016 Celestyal Cruises chartered the Gemini , which she used as Celestyal Nefeli .
Misfortunes
On April 5, 2007 the Sea Diamond , which had only been in service for Louis Cruise Lines for a few months, hit a rock off Santorini and sank. Two passengers were killed.
On March 3, 2010, the Louis Majesty was hit by a monster wave while on a Mediterranean cruise . In this accident, two passengers died and 14 others were injured.
