The ship was built in 1936 as Dunnottar Castle under hull number 959 at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast . The launch took place on January 25, 1936. On June 27 of that year it was delivered to the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company in London and then used in the liner service from Southampton to Africa. The ship's home port was London.

After the outbreak of World War II , the ship was requisitioned by the Royal Navy , converted into an armed auxiliary cruiser and used by the Royal Navy. From 1942 to 1948 it served as a troop transport .

In 1948 the ship was returned to the Union-Castle Line and, after a corresponding conversion, was used again in the liner service from Southampton to Africa.

In 1958 the ship was bought by the Incres Steamship Co. and sailed under the Liberian flag with home port Monrovia. In 1959 the Victoria was converted into a cruise ship at the Wilton Fijenoord shipyard near Rotterdam . The ship also received new machinery. It was then used as the Victoria for cruises along the east coast of the United States and the Caribbean .
