The South Ward was a 1971 posed into service cruise ship the Norwegian Caribbean Line . The ship remained in service as Southward until 1995 and was subsequently resold and renamed several times until its final decommissioning in 2012. In 2013 it was scrapped as Venus in Aliağa, Turkey .
history
The Southward was laid on June 1, 1969 as one of two sister ships at Cantieri Navali del Tirreno e Riuniti in Riva Trigoso and launched on June 5, 1971. In November 1971 it was delivered to the Norwegian Caribbean Line, which would operate the ship for more than twenty years. The Southward was used for cruises in the Caribbean during this time and was under the flag of the Bahamas with Nassau as the home port. In 1987 the shipping company was renamed Norwegian Cruise Line.
In 1995 the Norwegian Cruise Line sold the ship under the name Seawing to Airtours Sun Cruises . The Seawing continued to operate in the Caribbean. In 2000 Royal Olympic Cruises chartered the ship, which from then on had its new operational area in the Mediterranean . Even after the charter contract expired and the return to service for Airtour Sun Cruises, it remained stationed in the Mediterranean. In May 2005 the Seawing was taken out of service by Airtours and offered for sale.
The new owner of the ship, now renamed Perla , became the Louis Cruise Line , based in Cyprus , who continued to use it for cruises in the Mediterranean. After three years, the Perla was renamed The Aegean Pearl in May 2008 , but was still used by Louis Cruises.
On July 28, 2008, The Aegean Pearl collided with the cruise ship Zenith in the port of Piraeus . The The Aegean Pearl was doing damage to the railing while at Zenith no visible damage were reported.
On May 18, 2010, The Aegean Pearl was sold to the Israeli travel company Mano Cruises and from June 2010 it was used as a Rio under the flag of Malta . In February 2012, the ship changed hands again and was sold as Venus to East Mediterranean Cruises , who continued to use it for Mediterranean cruises this season. In autumn 2012, which was Venus in Ashdod launched . A planned assignment for a Turkish travel company remained unrealized. In the spring of 2013 the ship was sold to Aliağa for scrapping, where it arrived on March 28, 2013. The scrapping of Venus was completed by autumn 2013.
Sister ship
The sister ship of the Southward was the Spirit of London , which was commissioned in 1972 , which was originally also to be commissioned for the Norwegian Caribbean Line, but was instead taken over by P&O Cruises before it was launched . The ship changed its name and operator several times and was most recently used as Ocean Dream for cruises in Asia , where it has been moored in Laem Chabang since 2012 . On February 27, 2016, the ship overturned after water ingress through a crack in the hull.
