The Celestyal Crystal is a cruise ship operated by Celestyal Cruises . The ship was built in 1991/1992 on the hull of the Sally Albatross, built in 1980 as the Viking Saga .

history

The ship was built in 1980 by Wärtsilä as Viking Saga for Viking Line and used for ferry services on the Helsinki - Stockholm line. In 1986 the ship was renamed Sally Albatross and used for cruises on the Baltic Sea.

In 1988 the Sally Albatross was rebuilt in the Schichau Seebeck shipyard in Bremerhaven .

A fire in 1990 almost completely destroyed the ship. The hull was towed to Mäntyluoto in Finland , where the ship was partially scrapped. A largely new, elongated ship was built on the remaining parts of the hull with the undamaged engine, which in turn was named Sally Albatross . Since the old hull was reused, the Sally Albatross is legally the same ship despite the extensive conversion and continues to have the same IMO number . On March 23, 1992 the newly built ship was delivered. It was initially used for cruises on the Baltic Sea and to Tallinn . On March 4, 1994, the Sally Albatross ran aground in an ice-covered sea. The ship was towed to the Vuosaari shipyard, where the most necessary repairs were carried out from April 20th.

From 1994 to 2000 the ship was chartered to the Norwegian Cruise Line for cruises in the Caribbean and was named Leeward . After it had operated for Star Cruises in Malaysia under the name Superstar Taurus from 2000 to 2002 , it was transferred to the Silja Line in 2002 , where it was named Silja Opera and again used for Baltic Sea cruises and various liner services from Helsinki and Stockholm has been. After the ship was laid up in Tilbury from 2006 and changed hands twice under the name Opera , it has been used as a Cristal for Mediterranean cruises by the Greek shipping company Louis Cruises since 2007 . From 2011 to 2014, the ship was called Louis Cristal, in November 2014, as part of the renaming of Louis Cruises in Celestyal Cruises in celestyal crystal renamed.

On the night of June 27, 2015, the Celestyal Crystal collided with a tanker off the Turkish coast. The bow was severely damaged here, and the bridge was also damaged in the impact.

Sister ships

The Regina Baltica , which was built as the Viking Song , was identical in construction to the Viking Saga in its original form from 1980 .
