John Emery (born May 20, 1905 in New York City , † November 16, 1964 ) was an American actor .

life and career

John Emery was born as the son of the stage actors Isabel Waldron (1871-1950) and Edward Emery († 1938) in New York City. After attending the La Salle military academy, Emery began his acting career in the theater. Between 1934 and 1960 he appeared in a total of 20 productions on Broadway , including The Barretts of Wimpole Street , Liliom and several Shakespeare plays. Emery made his film debut in 1937 in James Whale's war drama The Road Back , the film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel The Way Back . As a film actor, he played numerous supporting roles in the 1930s and 1940s, for example as a psychiatrist flirting with Ingrid Bergman in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller I fight for you (1945). Three years later he could be seen again alongside Bergman, in the lavish historical film adaptation Johanna von Orleans as Duke of Alencon . Emery also took on major roles in numerous B-movies, for example as a rocket designer in Rocket Moon Starts (1950). From the 1950s he was also seen in numerous television series, such as I Love Lucy and Alfred Hitchcock .

Emery played his last of over 60 film and television roles in 1964 in the drama A Man Came to New York alongside James Franciscus and Suzanne Pleshette . The actor died of cancer the following year, aged 59. He was married three times, including the actress Tallulah Bankhead between 1937 and 1941 and the ballet dancer Tamara Geva . Most recently, he had a relationship with fellow actress Joan Bennett .
