Stork Fountain (Copenhagen)
The Storchenbrunnen (Danish: Storkespringvandet ) is a fountain on the central AmIERTorv , a square along Copenhagen's pedestrian street Strøget .
history
The Association for the Beautification of the Capital (Danish Foreningen til Hovedstadens Forskønnelse ), founded in 1885, donated the fountain in 1888 as a gift from the city to Crown Prince Friedrich (later Frederick VIII) and his wife Louise of Sweden on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary in 1894 . The sculptural work comes from Vilhelm Bissen . Another competition entry was the dragon fountain by Thorvald Bindesbøll and Joakim Skovgaard . Instead, it was set up on Rådhuspladsen .
layout
The fountain consists of a nine-cornered basin from which a multi-part column rises. The six-sided base is made of granite and is decorated alternately by three water-spouting frogs or clamshells sitting on a leaf . This is followed by a bronze drum with motifs of reed plants . Above it rise the three eponymous storks , which set off for flight with their spread wings. Finally, growing out of the overlying fountain bowl cattails .
Others
- The fountain is the central meeting place. Newly graduated midwives have been meeting every year since the 1950s to dance around the fountain. In the 1960s, hippies and punks met here for rallies.
- The legend persisted for a long time that the birds were not supposed to be storks, but herons . However, the Danish Ornithological Association refuted this rumor in 2006 based on the shape of the wings and the head of the birds .
- In 2009 the fountain became the subject of an experiment by the University of Copenhagen on the subject of viral marketing and social media : the Internet psychology department set up a Facebook group against the demolition of the stork fountain . Within two weeks there were 27,000 supporters. However, there was no official talk of a demolition.
