Strøget ( Danish ; The Dash ) is a pedestrian zone in the city center of the Danish capital Copenhagen . Traffic was temporarily calmed on November 17, 1962, but one lane was initially retained. The proud title of Denmark's oldest pedestrian zone therefore does not go to Strøget , but to Houmeden in Randers .

Strøget consists of several consecutive streets and connects Rådhuspladsen (German Town Hall Square) with Kongens Nytorv (New King's Market). The total length is around 1,100 m; it competes with the pedestrian zone of Esbjerg to be the longest in the country. When it opened in 1962, Strøget was the longest pedestrian zone in Europe.

Renowned shops down the street include Illums Bolighus and the porcelain manufacturer Royal Copenhagen .

The Caritas fountain is one of the works of art .
