Jacques Tore Werup (born January 14, 1945 in Malmö ; † November 12, 2016 there ) was a Swedish musician , writer , poet , stage artist and screenwriter .

Life

The versatile Jacques Werup was born in Malmö in 1945 and has been friends with Mikael Wiehe since childhood . In 1971 he made his debut as a writer. Werup has published more than thirty books in the form of poetry collections, novels , travel books and essays .

With simple words the poet Werup was able to convey profound ideas to the reader. Pathos and the really big feelings alternate with irony and ease. Elegies about the transience of the world and embedded humorous everyday stories from Skåne characterize various works. Because of this emotional range, he has been compared to his namesake Jacques Brel and also to Leonard Cohen . In 1996 the novel Den ofullbordade himlen ( The Unfinished Sky ) about Elsa Andersson , Sweden's first female pilot and skydiver in the early 20th century, was published. The book partially forms the basis for Jan Troell's film Så vit som en snö ( As white as snow ), for which Werup wrote the scripts together with Troell. The film won a Guldbagge for best film in 2001.

Werup's poetry is commonly associated with jazz . He played with Frans Sjöström in the Werup Sjöström group. In later years he worked several times with the composer Michael Saxell and on poetry and music concert gymnastics such as Gör mig lite levande ( Make me a little more lively ) with Lill Lindfors or En känsla av ljus ( A feeling of light ) with Mats Ronander . With the pianist and composer Rolf Sersam, with whom Werup had worked since the 1970s, and the drummer Johan Bergström, he undertook poetic-musical reflections on joy and pain in existence.

Jacques Werup was at home in both Skåne and France . He lived in Ystad and again in Malmö for the last two years of his life.
