Outdoor seating - balconies and terraces

A patio is a spatial or structural device for a temporary, but mostly long-term (usually seated ) stay in the fresh air. In residential construction, it counts as outdoor living space for (also qualitative) living space expansion.

Examples

The outdoor seating includes:

  • Terraces (without roofing)
  • With a roof, the terrace becomes a veranda
  • Balconies are built in front of the facade on the upper floors of a building and are fully open on at least one, but mostly on two or three sides
  • Söller or Altane, in contrast to the balcony, rests on pillars , columns or a part of the building below
  • In contrast to the balcony, loggias are drawn into the building and are usually enclosed on three sides by this; the fourth side is also usually not completely open, but is partially limited by parapet walls , lintels or wall arches
  • A raised, terrace-like porch in front of the house entrance is an addition
  • Also covered walkways can be used as open space if they offer enough for stay area. Constructively related to the balconies, the arcades are open corridors that are primarily used to develop rooms or apartments.
  • The not overbuilt but covered part of a gazebo is also referred to as a patio . This area of a gazebo ( garden house ) in a non-profit allotment garden association , together with the built-up area of the gazebo, may not exceed a total area of 24 m² ( Federal Allotment Garden Act ). The usual roof overhangs of the gazebo do not belong to this patio. The roof overhangs are calculated separately.

usability

The following factors in particular contribute to the quality of an outdoor seating area:

  • Orientation, incidence of light and view options, possibly tanning
  • where appropriate, protection from wind, rain, sun, noise and air pollution
  • Privacy protection from neighbors and passers-by
  • Can be separated and locked, e.g. B. with a roller shutter or a rolling grille
  • Expandability z. B. with a terrace, an awning or a canopy
  • Sufficient size
  • Location and living environment
  • communication options, if applicable
