Eberhard Brisger (* around 1490 in Mühlheim ; † January 24, 1545 in Altenburg ) was a Protestant theologian and reformer.

Life

Coming from a wealthy background, Brisger entered the Augustinian order as a monk. In 1508 he began studying at the University of Wittenberg and in 1509 moved to the University of Cologne . When he returned to Wittenberg, he acquired a baccalaureate in 1518 and a master's degree in 1520 , and was present at the Leipzig disputation in 1522, becoming the last prior of the Augustinian monastery. As a confidante of Martin Luther , he accompanied him to Jena and Orlamünde in 1524 . Together with Luther, he handed over the monastery, which had been dissolved by the Wittenberg movement , to Elector Friedrich the Wise in 1525 .

He himself then had the intention to retire into middle-class life and married a woman from Wittenberg with the first name Magareta, from whom there were at least three children. However, at the end of 1525 he became a preacher at the Bartholomäikirche in Altenburg, where he occasionally represented the local superintendent Georg Spalatin . From 1539 to 1540 he also took over the superintendent's position in Zeitz , where he worked as a preacher at St. Michael's Church in the Reformation sense . Poverty and illness weighed on his life, as did disagreements with Spalatin.
