The trattoria (emphasis on the i ) is a term for a type of restaurant. Simple dishes are prepared and served in the small Italian eateries. The atmosphere is familiar and thus differs from that of a restaurant . Trattorias are typical of rural Italy. In the cities there are trattorias that often only offer a simple dish (or a small selection) for lunch and remain closed in the evening. However, there are also very good and expensive trattorias, which ultimately only differ from a restaurant by a somewhat more familiar atmosphere. In Italy there is usually no pizza in a trattoria , while in Germany a trattoria is something like an upscale pizzeria.

The word is derived from the Italian trattore 'preparer' (of food).
