Ras Castle

The castle Ras ( castle Turner J ) is a former hilltop castle in the village of Schlatten (municipality Sankt Jakob im Rosental ) in Carinthia . It was first mentioned in a document in 1171, today only ruins remain.

history

The Lords of Ras originally sat in an older castle on the Gratschenitzen (also: Gratschitzen, Gratschützen) on the northern slope of the Karawanken southwest of Rosenbach at almost 1000  m above sea level. Little is known about this castle and only sparse remains of the wall have survived.

Ras Castle, probably the second ancestral seat of the speeders, was built in the 12th century on a hilltop in the upper Rosental above Schlatten. It was mentioned for the first time in a document of the Patriarchate Aquileia in 1171 in connection with the Church of St. Jacob : "sancti Jacobi ... sub castro Rase" . The castle hill is 635 m above sea level and almost 900 m west of and 100 m above the Jakobskirche. The castle was abandoned between 1309 and 1317 after the speeders relocated their ancestral seat to Rosegg Castle (first mentioned in a document in 1239), about four and a half kilometers further north of Ras Castle.

Today's plant

The remains of the surrounding wall and two round towers can still be seen. The complex with two courtyards was fortified by a ditch and an earth wall.

For several years now, an initiative called “Miklova Zala” has been working with the owner of the castle area, who also owns the Mikelhof below, to revitalize the complex.
