Jacob Sket
Jakob Sket (born May 2, 1852 , Mestinje near Sladka gora , municipality Šmarje pri Jelšah ; † April 11, 1912 Annabichl , Slov. Trnja vas near / in Klagenfurt ) was a Slovenian writer and educator as well as editor .
Life
Sket studied the Slovenian language , German and classical philology in Graz and received his doctorate there in 1878. He then found a job at the Klagenfurt Gymnasium, where he taught until his retirement in 1908. It is thanks to him that Slovene became a Matura subject for Slovene students.
Jakob Sket continued the work of his predecessor Anton Janežič and wrote school books and reading books for the Slovenian language for all levels of high school. He revised the Slovenian grammar ( Slovensko slovnico ) by Anton Janežič, a standard work that had five editions between 1889 and 1911. He also put together two Slovenian exercise books for German speakers and a small Slovenian-German and German-Slovenian dictionary. Between 1881 and 1886 he was editor of the magazine Kres , from 1889 to 1906 he worked within the framework of the Hermagoras Association in Klagenfurt and was its director from 1911.
Literary work
Sket published his first literary works in Kres magazine : the autobiographical novel Milko Vogrin (Milko Vogrin), the novels Žrtva ljubosumnosti (Victims of Jealousy) and Slika in srce (The Image and the Heart). He also wrote essays on the history of literature on the older Slovenian writers and on the Hermagoras Association.
The most important literary work by Jakob Sket is the historical novella Miklova Zala (Die Zala vom Mikl-Hof, Klagenfurt 1884). It is a historical metaphor about the suppression of the Slovenes in Carinthia and takes place at the time of the Turkish-Ottoman incursions. The novella was dramatized as a play by Jakob Špicar , among others , and had an unbelievable success in this form and was performed countless times by almost all local amateur theater groups in the entire Slovenian region of Carinthia with great commitment from the actors and the great participation of the population. In 1987, a revised and modernized dramatization that called into question the anti-Semitic character of the play was created under the direction of the director Peter Militarov and with the collaboration of the writer Janko Messner, the performances of which in St. Jakob sparked a controversy among the Slovene ethnic group.
